Bought my Christmas present from KEH, Canon 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM EF Mount, 559.00 and change. Any comments good, bad or indifferent? Have always wondered about the white bodied Canon's and now I will find out!
Merry Christmas. Congratulations on the mens.

I too have wondered about the big whites. Apparently, big lenses have large glass elements. With sunlight a large black lens would expand. When a lens expands, it can exceed the design tolerances. Large lenses are painted white to reflect sunlight. Black paint will absorb light. The bigger the lens the more it can be affected by sunlight. It is a good idea to keep all lenses and cameras out of direct sunlight.
Good idea keeping camera gear out of sunlight.

No comment here will change your outcome. Only your experience with this lens and the images it produces will tell the story.
Sorta late to ask opinions about a lens you already bought. Next time, if you want our opinion, ask before you buy.
Well apparently the cut off for opinions is before signing the check. My experience has been that when you do your part, that lens will do its part and you will get some of the technically best photos you have ever taken. Enjoy.

I never knew that, and it actually sounds reasonable. I thought they painted them white so the photographer can show "Look at me, I've got a canon lens that cost a shed load!" (just in case they didn't see the Canon 'billboard' on the strap)
And Sony followed suit to state 'we got pricey lenses too"
Well that's my long held theory down the pan!
Joking aside, its a stunning lens for portraiture, compressing landscapes, and astro with such a wide aperture. Try the planet conjunction tonight with it at about 100 - 125. With the late blue light sky you'll maybe get away with f2.8 10s at 6400 ish?

I own several large black Nikon lenses that have NEVER expanded, never EXCEEDED design tolerances. I have photographed Eagles nests with a black Nikon 600mm f4 while siting in full sun for hours and hours and hours without any expansion, without exceeding any tolerances.
Where do you get your information?

He has a habit of substituting conjecture for information.
Maybe is screams “Steal me I am expensive!”
I once noticed a press guy in a crowd with a camera hanging loosely on his shoulder that said “Nikon D3”. It should have said “$10K w/lens.”

Like all the whites, it is a great lens ! I used mine with a Canon 500D close up lens and a 1.4 II extender.

I have shot with big expensive glass since I was a teenager. Yes, I got $1.00 an hour and I worked my behind off to get these lenses.
Never had anyone even try to steal any of them. In fact, just the opposite happened. The lenses do tend to attract attention, but they also lead to interesting dialog with other photographers, and since they are usually the only ones who know the value of these lenses, I have made many long lasting friends over the years just because I had a big one in my hands.
In fact, in over 35 years of professional wedding photography, I used to sometimes leave my stuff laying on the floor of the church or on lawns when doing high speed posing and shooting outside. I never had an issue with anyone stealing my stuff.
However, when on vacation, I never take my expensive gear, stays home and I take a Sony pocket camera. Out in the world of travel there are those that pray on folks not looking after their purses, wallets, and expensive camera's hanging loosely over folks shoulders.

I have this lens and it is outstanding. It's lighter than the f:2.8 version and a bit more compact. Happy shooting.
