It is a great piece of photography skill to know when to change camera brands.

With all due respect, I believe that the "skill" is in the photographer knowing how to produce great images! My role is to "compose" and "expose" with a good tool. The backend work is all done through the agencies who hire me. So long as the brand(s) I use work for me, there's no reason to change.

I'm primarily a Real Estate photographer who also shoots 360 and aerial images for my clients . I have 445 successful paid shoots to date this year. I don't attribute much if any of my success and repeat business to the brand(s) of camera(s) (which shall remain unnamed) that I shoot with. My business comes primarily from 8 photo agencies who keep giving me business. For the conventional Real Estate shots they don't care what brand I shoot with, or whether it's a DSLR or mirrorless, so long as it's full frame.

Just my humble opinion(s).

Happy Holidays to everyone at Ugly Hedgehog.

Luck is great, but for most of photography, it's really just about what brand you use.

Luck has little if nothing to do with my business. My success is based upon meeting customer's expectations. If they weren't satisfied with my work, I would look at changing whatever needed to be changed to make or keep them satisfied. Not one of my client agencies has ever specified what brand equipment to shoot with. So far they are very satisfied, as evidenced by the regular repeat orders, and I'll keep shooting with what works for me.

All of my digital Nikons and DX lenses are made in Thailand. My film Nikons were made in Japan, AFD lenses same. I’m fine with Nikon being made in Thailand. The engineering and quality is still the same .

There are two types of people in this world: those who will tell you that you won't succeed with your current camera brand and your grandmother.

It doesn't really matter that much WHERE the factories are located. For all I care, Nikon can manufacture their cameras and lenses on the far side of the moon. What does matter is design, quality control, properly trained workers, and products offered to the public at a reasonable price. As long as Nikon can continue along this path, then all is good.

Nikon has been making cameras and lenses in Thailand for years. This "news" is much ado about nothing. Like any company, Nikon is looking to reduce costs and maximize profits.

All seven Nikon lenses that I have for my two FF cameras are AF-D's made in Japan. Maybe not as glitzy or fast as the newer ones made in China, but they just don't quit or disappoint.

Some of the D lenses are even better than the G.

"Survival of the enterprise is essential"; there are many paths to achieve this and some do not work.
Accurate prediction of the future is an "ify" proposition, not easily done.
Someone truly believed that the "Edsel" would be a success!
Markets change and the enterprise must be agile.
Try being a "futurist" and your batting average will not earn you a successful big league career.

Now now BT...you just don’t understand that CGG CANON simply knows better than every one of the rest of us and for that matter every photographer on the planet. Just because we can’t comprehend that only people who shoot full frame Canon gear can possibly create a good image or make money doing so doesn’t make it wrong.

There a word for people like him...

Brand owners who expect moments of seismic shift in the camera market to be comfortable and free of conflict have not learned their history.

I understand Nikon D850s are built in Thailand so what’s the big problem?

It's just an indicator.
Nikon has lost 8 billion bucks in the last 5 years.
Earnings last year were down 71%.
The only financial question is...how long can they last.
The Z line was supposed to turn it around...it hasn't.
