Scams have been going on for many, many years. Back when I was a kid, I recall hearing about someone who placed an ad in a magazine or big city newspaper that guaranteed respondents would be able to make thousands of dollars easily. All they had to do was send $X.00 to the address noted in the ad. People who sent the money got a four word reply, "Do as I did."

I actually received a letter from Nigeria back in 1989. It even referred to someone I knew in Lagos. The only thing I ever got out of Nigeria was malaria!
