I have used this combination on and off for several years now. In fact I have used it for a "head Shot" session and I and the customer were both VERY HAPPY with the results. I use it as my walk around lens on a regular basis with my D-810

I have the 24-300 on a D600. It is nice to carry one lens but I find the IQ drops off after 200mm. Below 200mm it works fine for me...............

Have noticed that in mine also and I just view it as normal with any zoom costing less than a kidney. If I NEED a 28-135, I buy a 28-200. Likewise, if I NEED a 28-200, I buy a 28-300. Thaz just how it is.

I have that combination! The only problem you might have is that you may never want to take it off. It's the best walk around lens available. We do a lot of world wide trips and I use to take 3-4 lens and a bridge camera.
Now I only take the 810 and 28-300 lens, and a good CPL.

I have both that lens and the camera you mention (D810) and many other options available to me. That combination is frequently what I choose for travel because : 1. It's the largest range of focal lengths I have in one lens that produces acceptably sharp images. I can mount the lens and leave the camera bag home. 2. The camera has a built in flash - useful in a pinch for fill flash or in museums etc. and at 36MP produces good images with enough features for travel use. It's the best solution I have for a flexible, compact and easy to cary picture machine.

I have a 28-300 that I use for travel—at least I did before the pandemic.

After reading your linked material I went and deleted all the great images from my worthless lens. Surely such results defy science and are therefore witchcraft. I’m hoping deleting them protects my soul.

LOL -- EXACTLY!

I have Nikon F4 then D800 with 14-24, 24-70, 105 , 80-200 and 28-300. I love these lenses and walk around with 28-300. But lately I switched to Sony RX10 MIII with Zeiss 24-600 , f2.4-4, lighter, more compact, faster and more reach for birds or macro.
I like the combination Sony RX 10 MIII, 24-600 and Sony RX 100 MIV , Zeiss 24-70 , f1.8 for travels.

Unless it is a free offer, I would not bother. Used it on my D750, it was OK but haven't put it on
my D850. That camera will show the flaws of any lens.

Yes it will show the flaws ... of any lens you put on that D850. If the 28-300 is too flawed for your expectations, more’s the pity. Whatever rocks your rocker is your best bet. It’s all about physics and you can’t buck that.

You’d not likely approve the commonly used lenses from the Nikon F, F2, and Nikkormat as appropriate for your D850. But, not knowing any better, we all used our “Tri-X lenses” when we needed to shoot some Panatomic-X or some KM25. The excellent results were clearly due to our simply not knowing any better.

Thaz just how physics works. If we, as the observers of that phenomenon, had only known how truly inadequate all our lenses were, the photons woulda gotten all jumbled up as they passed through our lenses, just as you quite eruditely observed with a 28-300 on your D850. The law is the law.

I have found just the opposite. I put older AF-D lenses on the D850 and wow, they look better than they did on the D5 or D500. Imagine that. Isn't that wonderful.

I use the 28-300 on my D850 as a travel, walk-around, general purpose lens. If my technique is good, especially shutter speed high enough to counteract camera motion (image stabilization is not a cure for bad technique), focus on the appropriate point, the images are often spectacular. I’ve been a Nikon user for decades and have plenty of lenses I can use on my D850. My 2 faves are the 24-120 f/4 and the 28-300 (up to about 250mm).

Not so much..." 'Jack of all trades, master of none', due to its large zoom range from wide-angle to telephoto and the problems that come with such a lens. The Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G VR is very similar to the 18-200mm in that regard, with plenty of optical problems such as distortion, vignetting, chromatic aberration and sharpness/contrast issues when shooting at large apertures." It is also weak in the sharpness department at 200 to 300 MM. Overall, somewhat mediocre piece of gear in my experience.

Merry Christmas!

My response is similar to most. Results in Manhattan were, in my openion, considerably above acceptable
when the D810 was paired with the 28-300mm lens. I made numerous hand held exposures of activities on the Hudson River and of a beautiful sunset through my hotel room window. Shots of Liberty taken from the top deck of a ferry on the Hudson were outstanding as well as the skyline of Manhattan taken from Liberity Island with the lens fully extended and hand held. I found out on arrival that tripods wern't permitted on the streets of Manhattan after the Trade Center Towers fell. I had a bag of lenses and my tripod to do some serious photography upon arrival. Day one was underway(tripod in hotel room) with the D810 and a backpack full of lenses on the streets around ground zero, the museum and the the new Trades Tower. Day two started with the D810 and 28-300mm lens on the subway to see the Macey's Tanksgiving Day parade: what a relief to leave the bag of lenses and tripod at the hotel. You won't go wrong on the D810 paired with the 28-300mm lens. Have a great holiday season, George

My favorite walk-around lens ( 90% of the time) on my D810 is my Nikon 24-120 F 4.0 . I was guided to it by the analysis of it at the website "Photography Life". Images are outstanding.

Being a pro shooter with the D750 and just recently the D850, let me say that I hardly ever use anything else except this 28-300. It is ideal for events when I need to capture a whole room and intimate close-ups from a distance. It's gone with me all over the West Coast, Hawaii and Europe, too.

Plenty sharp for most uses, event for portraits. Sometimes there's too much detail (pores, hairs).

You won't be disappointed.
