A large portion of the body of the bird was blown out but I think this is a better photo than the original would have been!

Very good job - maybe worth considering taking it monochrome and fooling with the contrast?

Good question - perhaps there are some birders who can tell us. I posted a full shot below.
The legs are not green, that is the green algae floating in the water.

I used the word "Salvaged". What I meant by that is the photo of the entire bird had some large areas of its body that were "Blown out" (pure white - no detail). The photo was not one that I was going to keep. By cropping very tightly, I salvaged a decent photo out of one that I was going to scrap.
