I'd like to recommend the above book to any Hoggers who may have been challenged like me to understand the new terms and lengthy menu system on the Panasonic Lumix G9. I've been shooting a Canon 80D with several EF L lenses. For a while I'd wanted to try MFT to lighten my load for travel. A few months ago I picked up a used G9 and set out to learn the new system with all it's technological features. I read and reread every manual I could find and watched all the instructional videos I came across. I felt I understood how to work the camera pretty well but sometimes it wouldn't function the way I expected when I changed settings.

Admittedly I didn't fully understand the complete menu system and use of the 19 customizable Fn buttons. I came across the book in the title and decided to give it try for $5.99 (kindle version). I quickly learned the step by step explanations and practical use for the settings answered my questions about why the camera sometimes behaved differently than I expected. Hats off to the author. So much technology, so may settings and so many new photo opportunities to experience. I just bought a used pristine Leica 100-400mm lens and I'm excited to use it.

You are going to love that camera, Pete. After a lifetime user of all things Nikon, shoulder issues had me rethink my gear. I transitioned to Sony A6000 and enjoyed the weight savings and their excellent camera...lenses were another matter. So I picked up a pair of Panasonic GX85's and several of their fantastic lenses like the PL 100-400...a jewel of a lens. When the G9 came on the market I got one, then a second one and finally, just for grins, a GX9. In 50+ years of active photography, Panasonic is the best cameras and lenses I've owned!!

And, I have David Thorpe's book and on my phone, desktop and laptop

but, out of interest, have a look at a GX8, which I see as an underpriced maverick that Panny could not afford to upgrade (the GX9 is an upgrade of the GX7).

Thorpe has a YouTube channel that is quite helpful, too. I’ve watched his work for several years.

There’s nothing quite like the GX8. It’s not a “Superbox” like the G9 or the EM1mk3. It’s a “Goldilocks” camera ... “just right”. It’s not amazing, merely nearly perfect.

Ignore geek tales of shutter shock. Do you ever hear about the shutter shock from beloved mechanical monstrosities such as the D850 or 5Dmk4 SLRs ? Think about that. And then, forget about that.

Firmware eliminated shutter shock, by automatically switching to electronic shutter when using certain lenses at certain shutter speeds, however, I tend to have electronic shutter switched on anyway, so no shutter shock.
and yes - all SLRs suffer from mirror slap - similar to shutter shock.

You will LOVE your G9!! Do you guys know if Panasonic does camera cleaning like Canon? My poor G9 is so dirty from shooting horse shows, the arena dust gross.

Bought David's G9 ebook (on your recommendation, thanks) to go with my new G9. Huge help opening some obscure corners. Have paired it with the pany 100-400. Astounding results hand held 800mm at 1/300 using 5-6 shot bursts, after all I'm 86 and so happy I downsized to a GX8 3 years ago. I feel now I have the creme-de-la- creme!

You're welcome. I also splerged for the Pany 100-400 and so far I'm real happy with it. I'm liking my G9 more and more every day.
