No one mentioned the Nikkor 70~180 macro F:4.5. I have it and it stunning.
Despite claims that it's the 'only true macro zoom' it doesn't mange life size reaching a maximum of 1:1.3 rather than 1:1. Remarkably good compared to most 'macro' zooms, but for macro not a patch on the Canon MP-E 65 which can't manage less than 1:1 and zooms in to 5:1. I believe there are now a couple of Chinese extreme macro lenses that are far more affordable.
I use Nikon DSLR and mirrorless bodies and am interested in starting macro photography. Recommendations for a high quality macro lens please? I’m an amateur and not looking to set up ultra sophisticated equipment - just need a high quality lens that I can hand hold. Am willing to spend money for high quality. Thanks in advance.
These are a couple of pics shot with the 105mmf2.8d micro. Hand held not processed except to convert to jpg from raw using nikons free software. I sold this lens when I bought the new copy. The only thing I gained was the ability to use the helicon focus tube.

Another example of the 105mmf2.8d. Hand held nothing special just a walk. Download for enlargement and pic info
The "Venus Laowa 15mm Wide Macro Manual lens" is an interesting lens in that it's both a macro and wide angle. It's a totally manual lens. As with most of my better photos, I see the photo in my imagination long before I set about actually taking the photo. I bought the lens just so I could take this photo. One problem with most macro lenses is that they have extremely narrow depth of field. The Venus Laowa provides the ability to get very close to a subject while still showing some surroundings.
I have a very steep driveway leading to my house. I wanted to take a photo that showed how the house was situated high on hill top with the long driveway.
This lens is no for a novice point and shoot photographer. You must plan the photograph.

Thank you. It's the only photo I took with that lens, then I put it away and have not used it since. Maybe next Spring when the bugs return I'll use it again. I was laying flat on my tummy when I took that photo. Some bug bit me and I had sore spot for a long time. Still, it's a good lens that I would recommend.
