Again, thank you for all the good suggestions. I ordered my 35mm 1.8. Probably paid more than I intended for a lens for an old camera. We will call it a Christmas present.
My reasons, old camera, only 14.2 MP. Light weight, so might as well keep the weight down. I will purchase only primes for this lens, if I buy anymore. On the other hand, one of my other cameras is a Sony a6000 for which I use some of my EFS Canon lenses. I may get an adaptor to see how the 35 mm works.
My Canon 80d my main camera is getting heavy for me to take on long walks due to my arthritis. This Nikon will not sub for that Canon; it can't.
But I have something new to try out during this freakin' pandemic.

Again, sincere thanks to all of you for your suggestions. I am amazed how much info was presented and I read every message and checked out every link. You folks are great!

Now, what lens would you suggest I get for my....
:)

I bought my D5600 with a 18-140mm VR lens about a year and a half ago. Great lens. Even though I have 5 lens now, I probably use the 18-140 80% of the time.

If you go with an 18-55 make sure you get one that will auto focus on your 3100. The newer AF-P lens will not. If you can find a used 16-85 (try mpb) it is a great walk around lens.

I would say to get a zoom. I have a fixed and only use it for landscaping and night photography. It's aggravates me when I use it to walk back and forth trying to get the distance between myself and the subject. I would say to get a used zoom 18-55 .It really gets down to how much you want to spend and what you want it for. Go to a camera shop and they will let you attach the lenses and then you can take a couple shots with them in the store or at least see how much of a zoom length you will be happy with. Good luck. I definitely would go used at this point.

There was a time that people would kill for 14.2 MP as they were paying a lot more for a lot less.

"The D1 was replaced by the D1H and D1X on February 5, 2001.[6] The D1X offered higher resolution with a 4,024 x 1,324 - 5.3 effective megapixels sensor (3,008 x 1,960 interpolated image output), and continuous shooting of 3 frames per second for up to 21 consecutive shots. The D1H was oriented towards fast-action photography, keeping the same 2.7 megapixels image sensor as the D1, but pushing the frame rate to 5 frame/s for up to 40 consecutive shots. Both the D1H and D1X use the sRGB/AdobeRGB color spaces, which is an improvement over the original D1."

You just might be happily surprised.

I was happily surprised. Took photos of our Thanksgiving dinner and the quality was great.

A friend gave me a Nikon DX 3100 camera, battery and charger, but no lens. It appears to be in excellent condition, but I don’t know for sure since I don’t have a lens.
I have Sony EMount and Canon EFS equipment.
I just want to have some fun with it, and obviously at this point don’t want to spend too much.
How are the kit 18-55 mm lenses? They can be bought at KEH reasonably cheap.
On the other hand I do have 18-55’s for both the Sony and Canon, 24 mp bodies.

The 18-55 DX is a pretty good little lens for everyday shooting. Not the greatest for low light conditions, as the widest f stop is 3.5, but as you said, they can be found relatively inexspensive used and new.

Kit lenses are great for getting started. They are pretty good lenses and they don't cost too much. With a lit lens, you can then get the kit tele, 55-300, again for not too much money. Then you will be set.
35mm is a good lens, it will give you a 50 mm view on life, which is pretty good. It is good training for you, but you might need something a little wider, that is where the kit lens can be a benefit.
But whatever lens you use, it will be good. I don't think that you have to consider the more expensive lenses until. you are set on a system, you have a couple going here.
