Attached 2 pics. of embroidery quilt (whole quilt & more detailed pic.) my wife made for a pending great grandchild. As she did not know the sex she alternated pink & blue for the flowers. I told her if the child becomes transgender it will be her fault! But that is not the topic for opinion. I told her it was too good a piece of work to be put anywhere near the various excretions an infant can produce & should be used as a wall hanging in the nursery but she said they could use it as they wish.

That is a wonderful keepsake! Should be hung on the wall and one day be "passed down."

Very nice!

Gift recipients get to choose.

I agree with the wall hanging opinions. However, once it is given as a gift it's in the control of the recipients. One way around that would be to frame it. Then there's no question that it should be hung on a wall.

It is a wonderful example of crafting and artistic work.

Your wife is correct I think. Once a gift is given it is the right of the 'receiver' to use the gift as they see fit.

Thanks for your inputs. Hopefully common sense will prevail but as you say it is out of my hands.

OK, i asked my wife, the quilter, about this. Evidently, this topic is discussed regularly in quilting circles. The general consensus seems to be:

1) once you give it, you have lost control. And if the child loves it, asks for it, and makes it his or her own, then that is the best compliment the quilter could receive.

2) anything given for general use must have the construction and materials suitable for washing and longevity.

3) if it is meant to be a wall hanger, put a hanging sleeve on the back.

4) if the quilt ends up being abused (i,e., becomes a dog blanket), don’t make any more for those people.

Hope that helps.

Beautiful needlework. I think if it got soiled, it would need to be either dry cleaned or gently hand washed.

My wife is also a quilter and does beautiful work as your wife does. It's nice to find something women are good for, huh. (If my wife sees this she will kill me)
