I just read a review of the Canon 100-400mmL f4.5-5.6.
This article stated that with a 1.4 extender the camera was 224-896mm.
With a 2x extender it was 320-1280mm. (probably no auto focus)
How
Camera 7D Mark ll
Talking about crop camera probably. Applying a 1.6 crop factor.
Terminology: The lens is still 100-400, but on a Canon APS-C body it gives the field of view of a 224-896 mm lens.

What are you asking when you ask "how". Are you asking "how" can it be 320 to 1280 using the 2x or are you asking "how" can it be that it will autofocus with the 1.4 extender and not autofocus with the 2x extender.
My question to you is are you talking about the Canon 100-400mmL f4.5-5.6 version 1, or the Canon 100-400mmL f4.5-5.6 version 2. Because if you are talking about version 1, the push pull zoom, you don't want that one and it probably won't autofocus with either of the extenders.
100x1.6=160
400x1.6=640
100x1.6x1.4=224
400x1.6x1.4=896
100x1.6x2=320
400x1.6x2=1280
This is the field of view you get with a crop sensor using L series lenses.

Version 1 is f5.6 on the long end same as version 2, no?

Yes, clearly that combines both effects.

Doesn't matter the math is the same - I have owned and used both the version 1 and the mark 2 and used a 1.4x III on both lenses with 6D & 5DIV FF bodies and 7DII & 80D bodies. I haven't taken my new to me 90D out with the 100-400L yet.

Yes...but the V2 is MUCH sharper than the V1

Agree, It is a 100-400 multiply by the crop factor first then multiply by the extender 1.4 or 2, to get the final number

But you agree version 1 will autofocus the same as version 2? I thought you said version 1 wouldn't in your first post.
