Portrait is nice, but the setup isn't practical for most any outdoor shots is it?

i can get the flash and the transmitter for £600 and then i have seen a good stand 6 foot 4inches for £20 but the largest softbox i can find is 24inch or 60cm is this big enough ?
I use a old Plume Wafer 100- it's 30 x 40 inches.
24" might work depending on what you're shooting.
Tons better than bare flash or the useless diffuser dome.
(not that bare flash doesn't have it's place)
Closer makes it softer, bigger makes it softer.
I'm not a portrait photographer, but here is a recent location head shot I did with two Nikon SB800's (one in the box, the other with a grid) and the IR controller. Sure beats draging powerpacks around.

I've done this outside- but you would be better off with an assistant. Just depends on how much work you want to put into it.
This is mostly an exapmle of what you would use to get this lighting.

Excellent choices! I have two of those Ebay 10 foot light stands and they are great. Have been pounding them to death for about three years and they are holding up really well. Don't forget a sandbag or two . . . or an assistant to watch over the stands. It really hurts to watch your new Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT Flashgun and softbox hit the ground from 10 feet up :(
Since your wife sounds like she is behind you all the way, you might want to recruit her to be your second set of eyes. When you first get started shooting portraits, especially groups, you tend to get yourself wrapped up in lighting and camera settings. Having someone watching for crooked clothing, untucked shirts, sunglasses, gum chewers and flys left open, can be the difference between success and failure to get the pro finished look.
does any one know if the Westcott 2334 Apollo Recessed Front 28 inch Light Modifier will come with the hot shoe mount or do i have to get that seperately ?
