Old 1800s Coat Button With Hunting Dogs, Metal Detecting On The Old Farmstead.

Great find, you never know what you can find around old places like you have. I have read about some real treasurers found and they are normally in places where people were not expected to be digging around. I have a friend that dug up a box with gold coins in it (just a few) while grading for the construction of a storage building. Before banks were trusted, people hid their treasures.
Yes I was watching a show on tv saying a lot of folks didn't trust banks and would hide their treasures. Nice find on the box of coins.

We live on a farm that dates to the late 1800's. I was using my metal detector around the old farmhouse and found this really old coat button. It is only a 1/2 inch in diameter but has some great detail of hunting dogs.
I was trying to find the history on this old button but haven't found anything yet.
Hi, Lorima
while i do have a button catalog that has hunting buttons, there is no description of the hunting buttons and your button is not among those depicted. I can tell you that this type of button became popular for hunters starting in the 1820s and remained popular into the early 1900s.
My son, lives in Montana, is an avid upland game hunter and has two very well trained hunting dogs. Years ago, I bought a hunting dog belt buckle with the head of a English Setter (same dog as he has x2). I mounted this in a shadow box with a couple of hunting dog buttons. The buckle dates to the late 1800s and fits a web cartridge belt for a 45-70. The belt was patented in 1881 for military use. After demand for this belt waned post Spanish-American war, manufacture continued and marketed for sportsmen for a short while.
so, i haven't definitively answered anything for you, but it puts it in context and i would say anywhere between 1820s and 1920s. The button construction seems to indicate post-Civil War, but that is more a hunch on my part. I do have an extensive collection of military buttons, so i am familiar with construction.
Hope someone else has more definitive info for you.

Sorry, all I know is what is stated on that page. Claims to be from the 19th century, nothing more specific than that.
I googled "hunting dog button" to find that. I quit searching when I found that one.
Hi Lorina! It's been awhile since I've seen a post of yours. This is really cool! I'll be anxiously waiting to find out more about it.
Thank you so much everyone.
