After a number of freezing nights and some snow it was time to see what the inside of a
Bald Faced Hornets Nest looked like. I understand the hornets will not use the same nest
twice so here is what the interior of the nest looks like. Some nests get as large as eighteen inches.
This is the before and after photographs.
Thank you. I had wondered but was too chicken to find out.
wow- slick bit of design.. they're clever little buggers
Interesting! I have one under the eves to take down after a couple more cold days.

The material from the nest makes very good wadding for a muzzle loading gun, like a percussion or flintlock. Not the newer ignition type guns.
They usually build a nest or two on trees on our land. Neat thing is they are not aggressive.
Way cool...! The Bald Faced Hornet Queen overwinters in the earth most often under a log or large rock. She is fertilized and spends the winter in a suspended state until spring where she will start her new nest and produce drones to serve her and tend the brood of others to serve her and to bring nurishment back to the hive. When the frost comes all of the workers and drones will die off and she will be the sole survivor. She will have produced other Queens who will leave to form their own colonies.

Sounds almost like our political system!
Actually, I think they will reuse their nests. My mom was a school teacher, and a parent brought in a nest in the dead of winter. She put it up by the window over the weekend, and the maintenance staff was confronted with a very active hive on Saturday. They were napping is seems until Spring.
