You should always leave at least one feeder up, for the stragglers coming South from Alaska and Canada.
I always heard you should take down the feeders for the winter lest they stick around and don't bother flying south, and will then freeze to death? I think Sept was the latest, maybe early Oct. I've read BlueJays may or may not fly south, they can handle the cold for sure, so I guess it's more about peanut availability🤷‍♀️.
We put our first feeder up this year and had a couple hummers look it over, and never took a drink. My buddy, who has the same feeders said you must change the sugar water every week or so or they won't touch it. That would explain our failure. I'll check out when to take down the feeders next year, assuming I can get them to show up at my feeder.
I put up a bunch of hummer feeders each year here in St. Louis. Several of those are small window feeders that need refilling each day. The larger feeders usually last 7-8 days, which is when they get cleaned and refilled. But by the first of October we will see only 2 or 3 hummers coming to the feeders and that is when I start removing feeders to be cleaned and stored.
The last bird I saw this year was on Oct 9th. Of course, the sneaky little devils could have come to the feeders without being seen. I kept a few feeders up until the 20th.
