Why disassemble if a hole is put through the platters?

Just out of curiosity.

So I had an old drive that quit. It was one of the deck of card sized drives. Nothing valuable on it and it was too small to really bother with. So I disassembled it.

Once I had it open I plugged it in and watched the heads move back and forth looking for something useful. Eventually they didn't find what they were looking for so the whole thing just shut down.

I noted that the disks themselves (two platters) are nice shiny pieces of metal with a really flat surface. They would make good mirrors. Since I'm a photographer and work with optics, I figured that it would be nice to have a mirror around for some purpose so I just put the case back on and put the thing in a drawer. When I come up with a need for a small mirror disk I'll take it apart again and extract the platter for use.

Always nice to have a semi-useful piece of junk lying around the house.

If you attach a small one to a screwdriver, it becomes more magnetic. Very handy for small screws.

Of course you can easily magnetize & demagnatize tools using opposing magnets, if that is your need.

Have had one of these for over 35 years, works everytime.

Like your setup. You even keep the HD spinning. Many don't know a HD can go bad if not frequently spun. Good job for backing up, even up to online.

Back in the days of 5 1/4" half high & full height drives. mb size drives,
I would remove the cover off the drive to free-up a stuck platter by spinner it by hand.
Put the cover back on an advise the customer to make sure they had a backup.
The drive would continue to work just fine.

Quite magical when I bought one many decades ago as a mechanic!

I have an old bulk audio tape demagnetizer that I got from Laffayette Radio in the early 70's?
I actually used it to degauss a color TV (CRT) screen years ago.

Yea, I think Laffayette used to have better quality on a lot of stuff.

A few hundred years ago, you would have been called a witch. What gets me is how it can magnetize or demagnetize.
