Hi guys. I would love to learn to shoot macro properly. I used to use a bridge camera and close up filter. However, I purchased an Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mkiii and treated myself to my first proper macro lens the Olympus 60mm f/2.8. I am looking for advice on any good books out there to buy for macro but also what sort of flash to get for macro? I don't want to spend more than around £50 on a flash at the moment however. Thanks in advance

There is a macro section on the UHH devoted to macro photography. That will be where you will find the most accurate information.

Macro, is one of the most difficult type of photography. I use a Platypod, small ball head and two flexible stalks with Lume Cubes to illuminate my subject. I fond the constant lights let me preview my lighting for shadows and fill without fiddling with strobes.

And I balanced a Nikon D850 with 50mm lens and macro extension tubes on the Platypod, so camera size was not an issue

Try one of the close-up filters from Cokin, I had the same problem and this was my solution...Julian

Flash with macro has a whole learning curve by itself. There are twin LED's mounted on flexible arms that are very popular. Most are a bit spendy. A cheap manual flash would work but be sure to diffuse the light for macro.

Best advice I got was shoot in manual, set lens to closes setting (opposite of infinity), and physical move in and out until you get focus. Best to use back of camera replay screen and zoom in for precise focusing.

john gerlack's book - "Close Up Photography In Nature" is a real good one with many tips; whole chapter on flash doing macro.

Ben, I suggest going to YouTube. There are many videos tutorials on macro photography, macro lighting and more. Some of the "hacks" you can find for flash are very cheap even to make.
