How did they saturate the colors without saturating the skin color?

Shot with fill-in flash first and foremost. Then manipulated with any of several things you can do in Photoshop.

Nice thought but you would have to question anyone using such a badly chaotic and distracting bkg. among all the other choices they would have had.

If it were done with one photo, the choice of time of day and skillful use of flash would produce a very good foundation for the processing to produce this result. Processing selective colors is not difficult.

Mask out the skin areas to protect them, then increase the saturation. Actually I'd select the various areas one at a time so that I could selectively adjust the saturation/vibrance in each area.

Lower the temp add add saturation. That will usually cool the skin while saturating everything else.

I suspect it's a composite or some exposure masking. There isn't any catchlight to speak of in the eyes of either girls yet there seems to be a fill flash in the image.

Personally I find it rather horrible, rave reviews or not. Cutting off the feet is unbelievable.

Another Ditto on the background being added. When I zoom in there is a black outline on the dresses where the mask edge is. I also agree with the thought that chopping off the feet and distracting background really takes away from the overall image.
