Sony lens hood issue

The ring that functions as the connector for the lens hood to the barrel of the lens has come loose and needs to be reattached. I am not sure whether it is a compression fitting, but regardless, it is going to be necessary to have a secure connection. This hood, in itself is a $1,000 item and obviously I do not want to loose it. My question is, any recommendations on the type of glue (epoxy) to use. I want it clear and will use a minimal amount, however just don't want to use anything that could be damaging. Thoughts appreciated.

Am not familiar with Sony lens but at first glance i would surmise it is a compression fitting. Is there any evidence of threads either on the fitting or lens barrel? I actually think not because of the photos you presented....if it were mine i would use a epoxy glue in clean matting surfaces....best of luck. Regards,
George.

No threads. I thought compression as well considering there is no evidence of glue. Thanks for the suggestion George. That's the kind of input I was looking for.

My first thought would be to contact Sony about it. Warranty might cover repair or replacement.

That crossed my mind, however I would hate to be without it and I would be somewhat afraid to take the lens out with out protection. Hate to indulge, however you were in the camera business. Any suggestions about contacting them. Just for fun, I am in Montana, but not a resident, just a snow bird. We bought a home in Virgina City, outside of Ennis. My wife loves to fish the Ruby, and I chase birds. What part of Montana are you in?

I don't know your hood personally (600mm?), but I do know any mods, glue, or jerry-rigging will void your warranty. Its easy to fashion a temporary hood out of cardboard or plastic sheets that will suffice as a temporary fix while yours is away, attach it with gaffers tape for no residue. But considering the hood value I would recommend contacting their warranty center as listed in your paperwork.

VC is nice, historic area, totally dead in winter though. I hope you had a chance to attend the Brewery Theater show at least once this summer!! I am East of you near Billings.

If you ever need camera repair help and are in the Bozman MT area, call Marshall at Bozeman camera. Nice guy and helped me out with the lens hood.

I took it up to him with the idea of using a particular epoxy he had recommended, but after he looked at the hood, he made the determination that Sony used some sort of flexible glue. So he recommended using that instead. He just happened to have some, saying that it is not available retail. Done in ten minutes, including the cleanup with Iso-propal alcohol. No one will ever know and I doubt whether Sony would upon inspection. I'm not too concerned about the warranty. Interestingly, I did call Precision camera repair, as recommended by Marshall, and they said that the lens hood is considered an accessory and they would not work on it. Hmmmmm, $1,000 accessory. Anyway, fixed and ready to use tomorrow if the opportunity arises. Saw your earlier email, unfortunately the VC Follies did not happen this summer; Covid. We love the area however and we are out of town a ways so we don't have to deal with the tourist during the Summer. But I can see that winters are dead. But we will be south of Tucson for the winter. Still looking for areas around to do some bird photography. Will be looking forward to spring next year. Thanks for your interest. How's retired life?

Interesting Sony does not cover the hood under warranty. I know for a fact that Sigma and Nikon both do as I have submitted similar hood issues to both over the years with wonderful results. (Both times were carbon fiber hoods glued into magnesium mounting rings that the glue failed on as well)
Covid has crapped out a lot this year, my Photo Expedition was even cancelled due to Canada closing its border.
Bird season is fast coming to a close at this latitude, even though the weather is still pretty nice, we had a new record high of 88 in Billings today.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your time here before heading back South.

My wife saw a bunch of Sandhills and Canadas over in the Ruby Valley this afternoon. I did have a bunch of fun with the Cedar Waxwings attacking the Chokecherries, before the black bears got to them. I had to cancel a trip to St. Paul Alaska due to Covid. Hopefully next year. It is getting very close to chasing the Sandhills down to Bosque. It was 84 in Bozeman this afternoon when I went up to visit with Marshal. But is is still close to 100 south of Tucson where I spend the winter. I'll give it a few more weeks if the weather holds up here. Appreciate the conversation and your input on the hood.

My Son lives just outside Ennis. As you say, great fishing on the Madison.
Ennis has or used to have a fantastic July 4 parade and Rodeo. Population of Ennis around 800 but 20,000 showed up for the parade the list time I was there
