It's certainly not a dirty word but you can sell for more money if you sell to the person who buys it to use. And the person who buys it can buy it for a lower price. It costs money to have the middle man. UHH website may make money I don't know but certainly not from people buying or selling in the Classified Forum.

You always get more money selling direct. When I worked retail camera stores, rule was used equipment sold for half of new price or more. You bought used equipment for one quarter new price.
I avoid ebay like it's plague infested.

Keh is really good. The best thing about selling to them. They pay the postage to their company. Plus even if it is a few bucks less than what you wanted. When you agree to their price and they cut you the check.

I believe that the buy and sell on UHH is strictly between members, so UHH doesn't stand to make anything on those transactions.

I sell any gear that is excess to my needs at Photrio.com. Photrio is an excellent forum that I have been a member for over fifteen years and have sold a boat load of equipment. They have members from all over the world and I have sold to Europe, South America, Australia, Canada AND the US. Very knowledgeable members and they have great forum topics on Analog as well as digital topics. I encourage everyone to check it out.

I haven't tried to sell anything through UHH, but have had nothing but super good dealings with MPB. They pay shipping both ways, and their estimates are a bit higher than others. Good luck...

I received the best offer on my Sigma 150-500mm from MPB. Easy to deal with.

B&H, Adorama, KEH, MPB and UsedProPhotos have an online submission process that allows you enter your equipment and condition so they can send you a quote. Last time I went through the process, MPB had the highest price.

Seriously, the way to get the most money from high quality name brand equipment is to sell using Craigslist, or eBay. I use Craigslist first, because you can get the most money there. eBay is my second choice because you have to package the equipment really really good, and it will cost you about 12% in commissions. I only sell on eBay when I've giving Craigslist a week or two to sell, sometimes longer depending on how fast I'd like the item to sell. One time I advertised a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens on Craigslist and didn't get any response for a week or so. I reduced the price several times and didn't get any serious offers. So I pulled the ad and waited a few weeks and tried again. I listed it for an even higher price than before and got an offer for about the same price as the first ad and took that. I probably would have sold it on eBay in 10 days, no matter what, but would have had to take a 12% hit.

That being said, if you sell to any of those online stores, I guarantee, you'll take a 50% or more hit on your bottom line. Now I'm not saying this is bad. Some people don't like to deal with strangers in person, don't like the possible scams from CL or eBay etc. So selling to a place like B&H or Adorama may be ideal if you don't mind taking a lot less money for your gear. Also, you have to realize that B&H has a lot of overhead so that's why they are limited to what they can offer.

I've had very good luck selling on craigslist. Recently sold: Nikon d750 for $900 and Panasonic gx85 with 12-32 lens $400. I'm in the St Louis area and always meet on a safe area. Police station works.

I've had excellent experiences, both buying and selling used items, with KEH.

Despite all the caution, warnings and horror stories I have had good results both buying and selling with ebay. Buying is easier because you can be more selective. Selling is a little harder. You have to decide whether you want to auction the item, sell fixed price or best offer. This means you have to be honest with yourself as to the lowest price you will accept vs what you would like to get. Sometimes you need to be patient and relist the item a couple of times. Finally you sometimes have to deal with jerks — best defense is no returns, no side deals and don’t ship until ebay confirms the money is in your account.

UUH or KEF are alway honest and fair (keeping in mind they have to make a profit) but if you can cope with the ebay hassles you will generally pay less as a buyer and get more as a seller.
