Walk the route of the Pickett / Pettigrew charge on Day 3. It's about a mile uphill over open ground. To get an idea of how big the area is walk and photograph the area from the Gen. Lee / VA Monument to the Copse of Trees (West to East) and from the 8th Ohio Monument to the monuments of the 3 VT regiments (North to South / Union right and left flanks). Confederates were in open ground and under artillery and small arms fire almost the entire time. What courage. Read Faulkner on what the Confederates were thinking just prior to stepping off. Read my puny effort from the RI Bar Journal several years ago entitled, "Rhode Islanders at Gettysburg". RI'ers played a key albeit not understood role in the battle. Some of my pix are in it (I think). If you can't find it let me know and I'll send you the article or a link to it. Mike

You have received some interesting suggestions on Photo ops. Let me suggest one for a gastronomical treat. The Shady Maple ... a smorgasborg of meat and treats to satisfy most diners. They just re-opened having been shut down from the state lockdown.

There are many photogenic sites in Lancaster County including the Central Market in downtown Lancaster,...You may want to consider the Landis Valley Farm Museum....

The popular tourist towns of Intercourse and Blue Ball usually offer opportunities for people shots, but I would urge you to remember that the Amish do not like having their photos taken. Those that work at the Central Market have become somewhat inured to the practice, but, please, wherever you are, try to respect their religious beliefs and privacy.

The Ephrata Cloisters are in northern Lancaster County.....there are quite a few covered bridges still in use in Lancaster County, the fields themselves are beautiful, Amish barns are often “decorated” with what is called the “Amish flag”— lines of drying clothes...

Having grown up in Lancaster County, PA, and calling it home until I finished college, was married, and we went to Belize for three years, I appreciate you wanting to find lovely photo opportunities there. I will emphasize what Gaddysmom has said about taking pictures of Amish. Please do not try to sneak a photo after they have refused your request. My suggestions is to drive around the area south of New Holland (including Intercourse, Gap, Paradise, Gordonville, and Smoketoown) and north of US 30.

Then when you see some Amish folk working outside near the road, stop, and talk with them. While they do speak Pennsylvania German, they are very fluent in English. After getting to know them, then ask about pictures. They would most likely be honored to have you photograph their barns, shops run by compressed air and diesel or gasoline engines, their white-washed tree trunks, flowers and fences, and even their cows, horses and cow-milking. Just be respectful and do not get in the way when they are working. From grade school through college, my family lived next-door to Amish families and their farms. You will learn much from the conversation. and it will make your photos that much more worthwhile even if you have few people in them.

One last item, there are two groups of Anabaptist Christians who derive buggies in Lancaster County. The official name for these groups, at least applied by scholars, are the Old Order Amish and the Old Order Mennonites. Their buggies are actually easy to tell apart, so don't mistake them. The Old Order Mennonites drive all-black buggies with almost flat tops. The Amish in Lancaster County drive buggies with medium gray sides and almost black tops with the edges of the top making a gentle roll at the edges to the sides.

Here is an excellent link discussing the ethics of photography and the Amish.

BTW, I am a Mennonite Christian and am not an Amish or Old Order Mennonite person. We drive colored cars and dress like most of the people around us,. But like these two groups, we take Jesus' teaching for agape love and peace and against violence and war very seriously. Like all Christians we value belonging to God's kingdom and practice baptism as a sign of committing ourselves to God and God's kingdom. --Richard (who just came back from a long weekend in Lancaster County to our home now in Harrisonburg, VA, USA)

I would also add a recommendation to visit Longwood Gardens. Been there 5 or 6 times traveling from Ohio to do so. Plan on a whole day to see it and photograph it. As far as Gettysburg it self, we ate at an authentic Irish pub, unfortunately I don't remember the name but I think it involve someones name. If your a fan of bangers and mash and a good draft beer, that's your place.

I lived in Lanc. County for ten years prior to moving to Myrtle Beach. Tons of photo opportunities in Intercourse, Bird in Hand and Strasburg and they are all within a half hour drive of each other. The photo ops are what you will see traveling the backroads between those towns. Too many to list and most of them are the unique photos that you will not be able to get in the larger towns and cities. Get out in the country for the best ops. Best thing I used to do was plan on gettting lost. My best photos came then.

Traveling from Vineland, it wouldn’t be too inconvenient to stop short and visit Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. Longwood Gardens is among the most magnificent botanical gardens in the world and is a true wonder. It’s about a two hour drive from Gettysburg and about an hour’s drive from Lancaster.

On my bucket list for another time Want those blue poppies

Irish pub was probably O'Rorke's Family Eatery.
There is also a new brew pub which name escapes me but it's on the corner of Getty Street and Washington Street right next to the hospital. Kind of small but food was good and decent price.

I just googled the pub and it's Garryowen Irish Pub on Lincoln Highway. Well worth the stop. I had the bangers and mash (outstanding) with a pint and it's doesn't get much better than that. Prices were ** - ***. Garry Owens is from Ireland and much of the interior was brought over from there.

The Blue Poppies are worth a trip on their own. I taught a class this year where we met in the greenhouse to photograph these beauties in a studio-like setup. Because of the warm winter we'd had, the poppies didn't fully cooperate; but the participants did get some spendid images. If you go, you want to arrive early; within two hours it's SRO in the area of these flowers.
