I had a biking friend who I asked about "butt-conditioning" for long rides. He said that a few sessions of his wife swatting him with a 2x4 did the trick.

Are saddles better nowadays?

You can not get better than Brooks competition saddles of 50 years ago...
so, no, saddles are no better today vis a vis comfort.
Saddles were perfected long long long ago.

Having said that, there are saddles of equal comfort today... ie perfect...
but they cost more than the OPs entire "bike".

And having said that, the "best" part of the OPs "bike" is possibly the seat.

I got this for my bday I have so far ridden just a couple of miles, now how to carry my DF along for the ride any ideas has how to, remember I am on a real tight budget the dreaded SSI

Anything you need to carry should be on your body... Avoid carrying anything
apart from a bidon on the bike.
A small pack is good.

Basket on the handle bar absolutely not! no way! never!

Unless the circumstances are totally unavoidable,
the only thing to carry on the bike is a bidon.

If you can, return the bike and exchange it for a bike
without rear suspension... for the same price
a "hard tail" is 4 times as efficient.

Rear suspension is a horrible liability unless you pay
thousands & thousands of dollars for it.

When I wore a younger mans clothes I
was a competitive Mountain Bike Cross Country rider...
Competitions were typically 3 x 8km laps flat out through the bush.

I still ride (recreation and commuting) regularly.

A recent photo of my current mountain bike... I acquired it
(used) back in 2004 and I've been using it
for recreation and commuting a couple of times a week
for the last 16 years.

For smooth rides like level smooth bike trails or roads or streets, I like carrying my stuff well cushioned in a bike trailer.
