Weird cannon thing

My dad shoots cannon and I shoot nikon so I’m at a bit of a loss. I just wanted to post his issue here and see if any cannon users have experienced this.

He experienced this trying to utilize Nd filters to take pics of a rocket launch. He says that when using aperture priority to get a base exposure Using 2.8 then puts the filters on And changes to bulb the aperature automatically reverts to f8. He says this occurs when using any auto setting to get a base exposure but it does not occur when Starting in Manual then switching to bulb.

Any ideas?

Doesn't happen on my 7D. I can set the aperture anywhere I want in Bulb mode. I guess have him dig through his manual, or just stick with Manual mode.

Could his lens been a zoom lens? Was he zoomed all the way in? the Aperture on zoom lenses change with the focal length.

When you change modes the camera will show your last settings in that mode, not the settings in the previous mode.

By the way, a cannon is a weapon and a Canon is a camera brand.

Did your Dad blow anything up with that cannon? Sure hope he got photos of it with his Canon camera. 😉

Well that certainly explains the other problem we’ve been having...for some reason everything we shoot blows up.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

But if you have a large enough lens on your Canon, it looks like a cannon.

Canon, not cannon. Sorry, the grammar police in me rose to the surface. When you said "my dad shoots cannon" I was imagining the old boy out on the front yard with a howitzer.
