This morning, robertjerl posted a photograph of a Raven. It's sort of a portrait and rather well done. The post is titled, "Hmm, What Looks Good Today?"

His post inspired me to think about something I'd read some time ago regarding the difference between a Raven and a Crow. To the average person, they both look very similar.
The difference is in their feathers. There are primary feathers and pinion feathers. The pinion feathers being the outermost feathers on the wing. Both have the same number of primaries (10 each). However, crows have 5 pinion feathers. Ravens have 4.

So, the difference between the two is a matter of a pinion.

Always loved this one! I used to do programming for Elderhostel in Sedona, AZ and often used this on road trips. Loved the reactions and expressions on peoples faces. Have to say, a very few people just did not get the humor in it.

A raven is a creepy bird. A blackbird is majestic member of the bird family. A crow is a loud nuisance.

Not sure this is true. I have heard owners of Great Dean dogs, that have litters of 8 or more pups, can tell at a quick glance if a pup is missing. Same is true of parents of septuplets.

The 5 barred gate is used in pubs to keep track of tabs.... four vertical slashes and 1 horizontal make 5 on the blackboard. It was too hard to distinguish after 4 for the human eye so this was adopted.... anyhow, crows can count. Sounds good though....

I HAVE lovely black birds in my garden......I have no idea if they are Crows or Ravens, but they are smart......I they think a crust of bread is dry and hard they soak it in the water of the bird bath and then enjoy it.

Ravens are usually a bit larger but that’s a hard decision unless you see at the same time. Biggest diff is the tail...almost straight across on a crow and rounded on the raven... ur unless you get a good look at the tail in flight it’s still hard.
