The magnificent "Huber Hall" on the main road through town on the college campus.
Incredible building.

Well, of course, the battlefield. You can drive through most parts and walk the rest. The battlefield surrounds the town center in three of the four directions. Renting a bike or bringing your own is the best way to tour. Don't miss the National Cemetery inside town where Lincoln gave the famous address. There's a museum too with a restored cyclorama painting of the battle. The massive painting was a way the horrors of the battle were shared with late 19th century audiences around the world. On a nice day, the brick buildings of Gettysburg College are wonderfully photogenic. The PA capitol building is just up the river from Lancaster. The insides of the building are even more impressive if open for tours or just public self-guided access.

There are many photogenic sites in Lancaster County including the Central Market in downtown Lancaster, which is open Tuesday, Friday, and part of Saturday. This is a traditional farmers’ market with numerous vendors selling everything from crafts to meat. Many of the vendors are Amish or Mennonite. It is best to arrive early.

You may want to consider the Landis Valley Farm Museum, which is located just outside of town. Part of the Pennsylvania state museum system, there are many traditional farm support buildings such as a blacksmith’s shop, a general store, as well as barns and houses. The museum runs a very successful heritage seed program and you should see many unusual plants growing on the property.

The popular tourist towns of Intercourse and Blue Ball usually offer opportunities for people shots, but I would urge you to remember that the Amish do not like having their photos taken. Those that work at the Central Market have become somewhat inured to the practice, but, please, wherever you are, try to respect their religious beliefs and privacy.

The Ephrata Cloisters are in northern Lancaster County. This is another PA State Museum consisting of buildings from the late 17th and 18th century built as part of a religious commune for an Anabaptist sect. The buildings are unusual and lovely and the museum has a few living history trades such as a printing shop.

Without knowing more about your personal interests, it is hard to know what more to add, but there are quite a few covered bridges still in use in Lancaster County, the fields themselves are beautiful, Amish barns are often “decorated” with what is called the “Amish flag”— lines of drying clothes, the City of Lancaster has a rich architectural heritage with many 19th century houses, including James Buchanan’s home, Wheatland.

Lancaster is about an hour’s drive from the state capitol of Harrisburg (and not on the route to Gettysburg), but the state capitol is an exceptional building.

I was there in the mid-70's as I didn't live that far away and used many days off there photographing the people. As Gaddysmom said, they do not like to have their photos taken. I always used telephoto lenses and tried to stay as hidden from sight as possible so as not to upset them.

Traveling from Vineland, it wouldn’t be too inconvenient to stop short and visit Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. Longwood Gardens is among the most magnificent botanical gardens in the world and is a true wonder. It’s about a two hour drive from Gettysburg and about an hour’s drive from Lancaster.

Please consider my college town, Carlisle,PA. Its downtown is the Carlisle Historic District is a national historic district, a lovely example of old. We lived in a pre-1776 stone house converted to apartments. Nice downtown hotel there too.

I used to live in Gettysburg. Going back in October myself to see family.
My suggestion would be to first thing get a guided tour to get a lay of the land then go about driving it on your own, stopping for photo ops at your leisure. Not sure with Covid but there are several ways to get a guided tour. Go to the Visitors center to find out all of your options.
Make sure to find Sacks covered bridge behind Eisenhower farm.
Lots of history, hope you will be there for awhile.
And yes, there are several areas like Lancaster that are not far but those would be day trips.
Oh, there is a face book page called Gettysburg past and present and Gettysburg pictures. Join them and you can learn a lot.

Agree, I have spent a number of days at Longwood Gardens. It is an all day adventure. Just down US Route 1 is Chadds Ford. If you like Andrew Wyeth spend some time at the Brandywine River Museum and take a drive along Route 100.

Not far from Lancaster is the Strasburg railroad. You can take a short round trip on the railroad thru pa countryside. A few Amish farms. On one of my trips I was fortunate to get a few pictures of Amish farmers reaping their crops

Hershey isn’t far away. There is Hershey park, state police academy, troegs brewery, outlet mall To name a few.

If you are a golfer there are some great courses in the area. Won’t list them here but if you are interested I will provide a few for you

Have a good visit to this area

Chuck

On the way there or back stop in Strasburg for the fabulous Railroad museum and ride the train there through the countryside. Also a great model railroad museum near there.

Others have suggested many, many neat photo opportunities; may I add a different thought? Check out the fantastic musical play in Lancaster, the contents of which can be seen at "sight-sound.com", for a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Their sets, sound, music and voices are outstanding.
