This is the sort of deep thinking that deserves a Nobel prize. I just live in hope that my wife does not read your post.

Everyone's heart has a secret nerve that responds to the touch of a new camera.

I'm good at the former, poor at the latter. I suspect that I am not alone.

I think hobby photographers are much like weekend golfers. I have known several golfers, and much like hobby photographers, they often hung out at the golf store, or pro shop looking at new clubs, putters, balls and all the other items golfers use. What I never saw or heard about was the golfers spending time practicing with his new equipment for any appreciable time. Most often, they would play a round or two with the new item and when their game did not improve, they sold or traded it and began looking for the next shiny item in a catalog or on the store shelves.

This is a theme that plays out over and over in many hobbies and pastimes. We watch the pros and yearn to perform like them by purchasing the same equipment they use. But we fail, or refuse, to see the countless hours they spend training and practicing while perfecting their art or craft.

Then there is the little voice telling you it is not so bad if you amortize it over the next ten years that you may not live.

Yes, it’s like having money under the mattress, you feel good knowing it’s there.

You've reached the final plateau, my child!

You're exactly right! If all you want to do is take pictures, you could still be using that camera someone gave you in 1960. If you enjoy photography, then you are allowed to accumulate as much gear as you like, whether you use it or not. The whole idea is to enjoy yourself, whatever it takes. I like ukuleles, and I have a lot of them. Do I play each one every day? No, but I like having the variety.

Yours is the best explanation, Jerry.

Hobbies are not governed by the rule of reason. A fact that I am constantly thankful for.

Red6, if you follow UHH's Photo Gallery and some of the specialty sections like Close-Up, instead of hanging out in main discussion forum, you will find many people posting frequently who are enthusiastic hobbyists, using the same camera for years.

Lots of us retired folk have the time and passion to enjoy the part of our hobby that involves taking pictures 😊

There are no rules for good photographs, great photographs have just one: the camera used was better than yours.

Yes, there is a lot of truth in what you say. There are those of us that use our equipment consistently to work and practice to improve.

However, I think we are in the minority. The number and size of vendors (B&H, Adorama, KEH, Amazon, and many others) selling used and new equipment indicates that there are many others buying, selling and trading on a regular basis. While I have no idea how much money is exchanged buying, selling and trading gear, I am sure it is many millions of dollars. If not, it would not be such a lucrative business,

When I die, my family will spend hours and hours sorting my gear.
