No Functioning Set Button on Canon 60D

Hello, I have a Canon 60D which has been working just fine until last week. All of a sudden the "Set" button and the multi-function button around it just stopped working. The wheel still works fine. The problem is not due to damage as it was working fine during shooting a few seconds earlier and the camera had not left my hands.

I read on the internet to remove the battery and hold the shutter down for 30 seconds to do a reset or reboot, but that did not help. I also tried leaving the battery out for several days, also did not help.

I cannot reinstall or update the firmware because the button needs to work to do the install.

Any ideas?

I would call customer service at Canon. They have always been great with me.

You have done the things that I would do. Good luck!

I'll posit the possible reality: your EOS 60D has reached its end of useful life. I don't have any actionable alternatives, sorry.

So, should he start looking at Nikons?

NO, I have 2 60Ds and a cheap upward move which I made was a 6D... Mixing and matching focal lengths and apparent focal lengths is a blast with a FF and a crop...

Not meant to be an answer. Only a jest at a Canon user.

I know mike....I get it ! I love the rivalry dialogue; Thats why I do Sony, Olympus, Sigma Foveon, and Canon in no particular order... Almost pulled the trigger on Fuji for the awesome color tones... Gotta go look for a third job now...

I have a 60D that I have had for about 5 years. I hate to think it has reached the end of its useful life already. Not saying much for digital cameras. I had my Exakta camera for over 20 years before I sold it and it was still working fine. And I had an AE-1 and a F-1 that didn't give me any problems.
BTW, I had to send the 60D to Canon because the SD card ejector gave up the ghost.

I agree, the cost is too high for a camera (any camera) to just up and die of old age, especially an advanced camera like the EOS 60D announced in Aug 2010, where the OP's body is no more than 9ish years old, probably a lot less. We don't know the exact age of the camera nor the usage history. I've had problems with both the AE-1's I've owned, and no problems ever with the F-1. Most every camera I've owned (Nikon, Canon, Sony) has never had any type of problem. It all depends on a number of factors, including luck.

I made a pessimistic assessment given used 60Ds run about $300. Can a repair be made (found?) at less than say $100? Probably no.

Have you checked the camera's custom button assignment menu? I don't have a 60D, but on my 7D Mark IIs it's a Custom Function.

I don't know of the Set button can be configured to do nothing. But maybe it's accidentally gotten configured that way, or to do something else, other than what you expect it to do. I have mine set to provide image playback when the camera is in the "shooting" mode. Even so, the Set button still serves normal function when doing things in the menu.

Resetting factory defaults will certainly clear any accidental change to the Set button... but is sort of overkill and will also clear other settings you might want to retain.

I've accidentally set things incorrectly. But have also seen "mystery" changes occur.... Changes in camera settings that I don't recall making and would be unlikely to make. For example, one of my cameras suddenly started applying a magenta tint in every image. (Easily fixed since I was shooting RAW... Still, it made for extra steps that weren't necessary). I finally tracked it down to a setting in the camera's menu that was biasing the color rendition... But I know for certain I'd never set it that way!

Other times, it's been my own mistake. Couldn't for the life of me figure out why my flashes weren't working on my cameras. Well, I'd set "disable flash" sometime earlier, thinking it would simply prevent the puny built-in flash from popping up. I generally avoid using those (they draw too much power, are weak, in the worst place possible for redeye problems, and their slow recycling really slows down shooting). Unfortunately, "disable flash" applies to both the built-in and to any external flash. After some panicking, someone suggested I check it and that's why my flashes weren't working. D'oh! P.S. Why it's programmed that way makes no sense to me. If you think about it, why would anyone attach a flash to the camera, then disable it in the menu? If you don't want an external flash to work, you can simply turn it off or remove it entirely. OTOH, it makes some sense for there to be means to disable the wimpy built-in flash.

I have had the 60D since about May 2010 so I guess I really have used up its life. I have taken 10's of thousands of photos, but have treated it very well.

These instructions will not help me since the "set"/"select" button is the one that is not working.
