I just turned 81 years old and would like to think that I can still reason well. BUT- I received my new Sony RX10-M4 a couple of weeks ago and I am having trouble using it. I find all of the options really intimidating. I have been shooting for many, many years and would like to think I have the basics down real good BUT- apparently not. Sooo many choices. I have the Nikon 750 and love it but it will not shoot video, never has. I thought instead of sending in the Nikon to have it fixed, I would buy this Sony and get much better video than I would off the Nikon. (Anyway, that's what I learned doing much research.)
So here I am pretty much confused with my new Sony. I am having trouble transferring pictures and videos to my iMac. When I connect via USB, the computer does not see the camera (it recognizes the Nikon right away on my "Image Capture app"). Then I removed the card from the Sony and plugged it into the computer. It transferred all of the pictures to the computer into an app called "Dropbox", which I didn't even know I had. BUT, it did not transfer my videos..... Then I spent hours on "youtube" trying to see what I might be doing wrong- found nothing. I even tried to find info on transferring via WiFi. There was something on the MII or MIII but the options were different than on the MIV. I would appreciate any assistance you could give me and thank you in advance.

The best approach might be to open Finder, make a destination folder on the computer, and just drag and drop the files to it.
Well if youve got a mac and just want to get pics over to it, the easiest way is to put the sd card into the mac and then open the photos app.....it will show you all your pics and give you the option of importing them...you can then put them into an album. You can do a similar thing with lightroom if you have it. I have the rx10m4 and have a lot of the options turned off....you wont need a lot of them......I dont use the touchscreen which is also turned off.......had a load of problems caused by my nose catching the touchscreen and changing the focus point...very irritating
Forgot to say the easiest way to transfer video is to create a new folder on the mac and simply drag them from the sd card into the new folder, you can then drag them all into imovie if you want to stitch them together.
You are 18 months older than I. Nine months ago I purchased a RX10iv. Yes, initially the menu(s) are intimidating - less so for me because of previous Sony experience. Now nine months later, I have managed to muddle through. The RX10iv has its limitations but overall I am happy with the results and pleased not to be a pack mule for a stable of lenses. Keep swimming.
Being a Nikon user for many years I too found this Sony’s menus and functions difficult. Alexander White’s photographer’s guide to the DSC-RX10 IV helped a lot.
Agree with post above. Take the memory card out of the camera and put it in the reader on the computer. Then you can copy the files.

You can do the same thing using the USB cable. Connect the cable and turn the camera on. The LCD will display a message that says, "USB Mode." In Finder on the Mac, look under "Locations" (where the various drives are listed), and you should see one called "Untitled." Click on it, and you should see the same folders and image files you would see if you inserted the card. From there you can copy and paste the files to another folder, if that's what you want to do. Or, as others have suggested, a photo app, such as Light Room, should located the files automatically in its import mode.

I also had the same problem when I upgraded Sony cameras. The type of video file you choose to shoot with may not be supported by the Mac you have. In addition to the above solutions, try downloading the Sony photo app. On my mac it seems to be the one place that accepts all my videos. Good luck, and it is not your age, it is the understanding of the technology that makes these things difficult. Don't be discouraged!!

My RX10 m4 is set for XAVCS 4K, the only 1 of the three choices that is labeled 4K. The files it produces are in the MP4 format so I doubt that the OP's Mac would be unable to read them. In any event, VLC is free and downloadable and can read almost any such file.
Others who have this camera or might be thinking of getting it should take note of this.

Download Sony's free Play Memories Home (or something like that
) It will probably do what you want without hesitation.
Install the FUSE Preference Pane on your Mac. Your problem is likely to be the file type of the videos; FUSE allows the MacOS to read almost any WinTel files without converters.

As I pointed out above this is very unlikely to be needed. Third party solutions should be used only when needed.
VLC is a third-party solution; QuickTime is the native MacOS app. QT can play "most" mp4 files, but some CODECs are not native to QT.

Correct. Needed for many file types that are not opened by QT. Several. Also much better at frame capture and file conversion. No absolutes.
