Microsoft? Shame on them. I bought a second MacBookPro, as back up to my teaching. Less then a year ago, I paid $150 for Microsoft Office and installed it on this new iMac desktop. Well, I wanted to install it on my Apple refurbished MacBookPro. I have the Key Code, entered it all, and when just about finished, the Microsoft screen informed me that I needed to call their 800 number. After re-entering the Key Code three times, and bounced between the "agent" and his supervisor, I learned ... just about two hours later, that the "agent" wanted me to purchase an Internet protection plan, ranging from $195 to $495. After it became clear to me that this was THE purpose for me to all their 800 number, I insisted that the install be finished. Within 5 minutes, the install was finished. Shame on Microsoft.

I have encountered countless installations of office office professional etc. etc. and I have never experienced this or seen this before. Where did you buy it from.

I bought it, for $150, from our school store at Webster University. One week later, I saw it offered by Amazon for $100.

Wish me luck, I'm going to move over to the back-up iMac I bought, to back up this one. It's Sunday, perhaps the Sunday crew are not as sales-driven.

I wish you luck brother I think you’ll be fine. By the way I also purchased a couple of windows 10 professional installs in office professional installs from our school or university bookstore they used off room and desk then they offered you an envelope with a download link to the third-party provider I didn’t have any problems with any of them but who knows things of changed good luck brother.

Quick tip:

Pop open the PC's case and point a small room fan at the motherboard.

Plug the fan into a different outlet (preferably on a different circuit, but not absolutely necessary).

Have fun!

Part of the problem is the location. I have it in a computer rolltop desk. Ordinarily, getting hot isn't a concern, but with both hard drives running, in addition to the C drive, it tends to heat up. I think I might have to remove the CPU heat sink to get at the fan header, and I'd rather not do that. Adding a fan to the desk itself might be a better idea. I could also remove the plastic front of the computer to let more air in.

Setting up a new computer is both good and bad. I have hundreds of folders and thousands of files to transfer, and that's not counting all the programs I have to install.

I removed the D drive from my dead computer and put it and a new drive into the new Dell. Then I began copying files and folders from D to E, pausing when the drive temperatures got to 120°. Going through the files gives me a chance to eliminate many that I no longer need, but I have to keep the two drives coordinated for when the other computer starts working again. When I'm finished copying, I'm going to one or more fans to keep things cool. Ideally, I'll have a switch to turn on the extra fans so they're not running all the time.

So far, all my key numbers have worked to install the programs, but I suspect there will be problems with some of them. By the end of the day, I'll have two identical drives in the Dell, and then I'll back them up to my externals and NAS. On the plus side, it gives me an excuse not to do housework or work outside.

I used Zinstall to transfer everything (including programs) from my old PC to the new one. I connected the 2 PC's with an ethernet cable, let it run over night, and it was finished in the morning. It was almost perfect; only a few things that I needed to fix. It was really worth the cost.

Years ago, when we transplanted from NJ to NC for 13 years, I purchased a new beautiful oak roll top desk for my computer. I learned to hate it. It looked beautiful, but it was far from functional for a computer desk.

Just received a new Dell XPS desktop, so I can empathize. I downloaded new copies of all my primary software. All photos and other key information are on external drives, so that was no issue. I did learn that for transferring files for programs like iTunes it is helpful to (gasp) follow their directions. I can’t believe how much faster things run! Definitely a quality of life upgrade. Have fun with yours.

Another reason to love the MAC. Built in Time Machine can restore a drive or copy to a new one with an exact duplicate. Just set it and forget it. Takes a while but you can be cooking and gardening while it does it for you.

I used to have this computer:

until I sold it some guy named John Titor.

Who gets the joke without googling it, or by googling it if you confess to using the google?

No Google. He was the founder of another computer company? A guess!

You need to be a bit more looking to the future, but to the best of my knowledge he founded no company.

I don't know Dan Fry ... but I did used to listen to Art Bell for the weirdness.

Actually, before somebody starts pestering me for info on John Titor, I don't know him either ... or do I?
