I gave up on using an intervalometer a long time ago. It never worked for me the way I thought it should. Perhaps I wasn't taking the right drugs to make it work. However, if you set the SS for 30 seconds. Plug in a wired remote that locks, and have at it. It will take the 30-second shot, then immediately takes the next shot. No time gap. I use a D-750 and no buffer issues. You want 80 shots, walk away for 40 minutes. I will never try to program an intervalometer again.

Thanks....what remote do you use?

The correction needed is to set your interval 2 seconds more than the exposure time. So a 30 exposure would have a 32 second interval. I've done many time lapse exposures using D300, D 610, D750 and now D850. Works great for MW time lapses. If this is a repeat of anothers answer, apologies extended.

Thanks Rick....no apology needed.....I figured out what my issue was with the external Pixel pro...I need to set my camera to Bulb mode and not at 30 seconds.....still working on getting the internal one to work right.

I use either the Nikon MC-DC2 Remote Release Cord or a Shoot Remote Switch. Nikon is around $30 and the Shoot is under $10, and they both work equally as well for me.

What a great idea......I am going to test this out but I don't have a XQD card yet....will see if it works to just a regular SD card. Well dang....the Pixel pro TW283 doesn't have a lock "on"....I can't lock the shutter button down like you can....dang it!!

What cable release do you use?

Cindy - I use the Nikon MC-30A cable release. My first 2 cable releases were third party and they wore out in a short time so I paid more to get the Nikon MC-30A and so far it is holding up and it's been more than a year now. I use it all the time including last night to photograph the comet neowise. For what it's worth my D500 is tripod mounted paired with a Rokinon 16mm F2.0 lens. I sometimes vary the aperture from f/2.0 to f/4.0 depending how I want the trails to look. The lens is manual focus only, I turn off VR, shoot in manual mode, ISO my vary from 100 to whatever works, WB is set to daylight, and I set the release mode to CH. Once you engage the remote shutter release cable and set the lock the camera takes repeating exposures until you disengage the cable release lock. It is simple and this way you can take as many exposures as you like but you have to time it so that you get the length of trail you want. Just give it a try and see if it works for you. Happy shooting.

Thanks for the info! I will check out that type of remote...it sounds a lot easier than the Pixel one I have. But I was able to get it to work and figured out what I was doing wrong....so at least I can play again and try and get a good star trail shot! I was able to get a cool shot of the Comet the other night as well....that was really something to see.
