I'll delete my answer before posting it. I saw this a couple of weeks ago. As you said, it's English vs mathematics.

The battle of Mathematics and English. Let’s see who can get it right
Question:
1 rabbit saw 9 elephants while going to the river. Every elephant saw 3 monkeys going to the river. Each monkey had 1 tortoise in each hand.
How many animals are going to the river?
If you win, I will delete your answer so that others can still guess .
I actually do not know the answer. You might consider telling your logic.

I’m going with 82, assuming each elephant saw 3 different monkeys. Not stated, but the tortoises were going to the river by default. 1 rabbit, 27 monkeys, 54 tortoise

According to the wording, 10 animals were going to the river.

1 Rabbit going to the river; 3 monkeys going to the river; monkeys were carrying a total of 6 tortoises.
1+3+6=10
The elephants were not going to the river, they saw the monkeys going to the river.
Going on the premise that each elephant saw the same monkeys.

(Hope the monkeys didn't put the tortoises in the river, the tortoises will drown.)

Well do tortoises count as animals, or reptiles? I say 4, 1 rabbit and 3 monkeys.

10 or 82

The rabbit saw 9 elephants “while going to the river” Only the rabbit was going = 1

Each elephant saw 3 monkeys going to the river
“Each monkey had 1 tortoise in each hand” = 3 per monkey

If the elephants saw the same 3 monkeys then the total going to the river would be 10

If each elephant saw 3 different groups of monkeys, then the total would be 82

The 9 elephants were not going to the river
