Boy Scouts USA is desperate for membership. Girls Scouts don't need to join Boy Scout troops. Girl Scouts do a lot more than sell cookies, and learn skills good for life.

If you look at the epaulet loop you will note that she is a Cub Scout leader. Women have been leaders in Scouting since I was a cub back in the 1940's. I'm a Unit Commissioner and one of my scout troops is a girls troop. I'm amazed at the enthusiasm these young ladies have for the things that they are learning. One of my Cub Scout packs is a family pack with both boys and girls. Girls joined the Cub Scout program before it was available at the Boy Scout level. This was largely due to parents bringing female siblings along when they brought their sons to den and pack meetings. Naturally the girls began asking why they couldn't join. Now they can.

Boy Scouts of America is in Chapter 11. That is the national organization. The local councils are separate organizations and have their own finances and run the Scouting program. The national is a policy and support organization. The outcome of the restructuring will affect the local organizations in the form of dues increases.

BSA's problems date back many years when some adult leaders abused their positions. Every scout leader must now undergo Youth Protection Training which not only outlines guidelines to ensure that an adult leader is never alone with a youth, but also to recognize the symptoms of abuse in a child.

The image of Scouting may have been damaged, but I can guarantee that the fact that having achieved the rank of eagle will make a candidate more interesting to a prospective employer.

If you never were a Scout, Google Boy Scout Oath and Law to see the character traits that scouting instills in youth. (Before you jump all over that statement, I know: "Nothing is 100%)

Girl Scouting does everything for girls that Boy Scouting does for boys. Girls do not need to join Boy Scout troops. Boy Scouting is seeking to poach girls to shore up their failing troops.

There is a place for single-sex education, recreation, and Scouting. It allows girls to excel without being judged on looks or personality. Boys can excel without the preening and posturing typical of boys who want to impress girls. Leave well enough alone. Keep Scouting separate for boys and girls to grow and learn in calm and safe environments.

I couldn't agree more. There is a need among youth to be freed of the influences of the opposite sex. But it was women who sued BSA to gain entry, not the other way around.
