The radio in my 2020 Fit wasn't working, so I brought it to Honda. Four weeks later, I got it back. They had to replace the radio display - the LCD screen. Honda's price for that - $950. Hard to believe, isn't it. Of course, this was covered under the warranty. In replacing the display, they reprogrammed the key fob, so I have to go back on Tuesday to have the spare key reprogrammed. When I called for an appointment, he had to check to see if there would be a charge to do that. Ridiculous. No charge. I'm glad they didn't charge me for making the appointment.
The check engine light goes on and off intermittently on our 2010 Odyssey, which has 200,000 miles on it. I think the light is a pre-programmed money-maker, as the car works perfectly fine, but last time I went to the dealer, they wanted $700 to make the light stay off.

These days consider yourself lucky. They could have charged you for each screw added.

Absolutely correct. If your state inspection doesn’t care or you don’t have one, a piece of black electrical tape will fix that problem immediately. In NC, if the check engine light is commanded on for ANY reason (whether the bulb is good or bad), it’s an automatic emission inspection failure.

My independent mechanic turns the dang thing off while he works on the car.
You can have it turned off but it will come back on if repair is not done. 99% of the time it is an emissions item at fault or something as simple as a misfire. Normally not an emergency to have it turned off but doesn't hurt to see what caused or is causing it.

Agreed. If you don’t have an OBD II tester, many auto parts stores such as autozone will read the code for free. You can then look up the code online and decide if it’s something you can address or you need a trip to your mechanic. The caveat is that the code may be very general and you may need a more sophisticated tester (sometimes particular to your specific manufacturer) and advanced troubleshooting skills to determine the actual issue.

We had that problem with a car a couple of years ago. It would not pass inspection until the problem was fixed. Fortunately, the car was totaled before we had to spend any more money on it. If you turn off that light, the car has to go through a driving cycle before it can be inspected. By then, the light will come back on. I paid Honda over $700, but that didn't fix the problem. The next step would have been fuel injectors for $1,700. That was one time when getting rammed from behind was a good thing. (No jokes, please

But the accident report says your transmission was in reverse. Also that bulldozer was just parked at a construction site!
Speaking of Penny's solution, I have used it. Why? My "Driver's air-bag disabled". I actually want that!! I wear glasses. Have you ever seen or heard what happens if an air bag goes off and the person is wearing glasses? Even the dealer admits that the air bag is primarily for those who won't wear their seat belts. I put my seat belts on even before backing out of the garage. So, not a problem for me. I'm glad the air bag is disabled. But I don't want to see that constant display about the air bags. So, Penny! Thanks for the tape idea. BTW, doesn't Peter use that idea on Family Guy, or is it Homer Simpson?

But it was parked in a handicapped spot, so it wasn't my fault.

I'm surprised that a dealer would say that. It's nonsense.
The seat belt and airbag work together. I don't know why they think it's necessary to tell us that the passenger's air bag is disabled. It used to be that if you had lightweight items on the seat, the air bag was disabled so as not to waste it in case of an accident. My 2020 Fit always has that light lit unless there is someone sitting in the seat.
Would the passenger's air bag go off in older cars if there were no one in the seat?
I've been told that Honda's are wonderful. I know a guy who's Lexus caught fire...... IN HIS GARAGE!!! I've been very happy buying Fords.
