My grandson is almost 5 years old. A few years ago I got him a toy camera which shows cartoon pictures when you press the shutter release button. Lately he has taken a real interest in it. I'd like to get him a real camera that takes photos. Although almost 5 years old, he's very technical savvy. He operates my son's & my cell phones watching U-Tube of rocket launches. He uses the touch screen to go from post to post of launches. My question is what camera to get him? V-Tech or Fisher-Price or Nikon or Canon bridge camera. One that he can see the photos he takes on an LCD screen. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Here is my two cents. At 5 they still drop things at times ,not his fault, so a fisher price or VTech is a good starter they have a great bounce factor and at 5MP is better than what I started with digital. My grand daughter, I gave her a lego camera and let her go and it was fun just seeing what she took. I Call it the child’s eye! She shot everything, the corner of a picture frame, a door knob, pattern in our wallpaper, the dogs ear eye and nose. She had a ball and made me rethink that there are many things to shoot that are around us daily that we don’t see anymore. What ever you give him you two will fave fun.

My oldest granddaughter was about 3 1/2 when she started getting interested in her grandmas camera. She seemed to have a pretty good eye and caught on quickly. I had a Nikon P5000 that I was not using, so I deemed that “her camera” she is 8 now and she still packs that camera around taking pictures of anything that interests her. She has taken care of it and is really pretty good. She has not yet played too much with the manual settings on it, but her technique is very good, so will need to start on learning settings. Gotta encourage them young, get them interested in getting out of the house and learning! Good luck with a camera for your grandson, they can have responsibilities at that age, just have to monitor them and give them guidance.

Olympus Tough TG2. It came out 2013 waterproof, shatter proof etc. It earned a 79% silver award from DP Review

I agree that the TG series from Olympus would be worth considering. The TG6 is the current model. It sells for about $350.00 new. (Less $$ than many smart phones).

I got two of my grandsons VTech's when they were little, and the oldest two "graduated" around age 7 to other cameras. Got the middle one a Fuji Finepix X130 refurb for around $60 and it has performed great, plus it appears indestructible. Got the 10 year old a second hand iphone that cost only a few $ because it is incapable of making calls but the camera function works and will download to his chromebook. Hoping to recruit at least one of them to share grandma's interest in photography!

A Nikon Z50 ls fairly inexpensive, small, comes with two lenses and is really a great camera.

350 is a lot to spend on a camera for a 5 year old, no matter how precocious. I think the cell phone or the fisher price is a much better idea.

I would go on your local market sales (Facebook) or a garage sale and find a point and shoot digital. Low cost. People are using their cell phones so they have cameras they want to get rid of cheap. Point and shoot with a zoom. It has everything a kid that age needs to learn. I just bought one for my grandson 10 megapixel point and shoot Nikon 15 dollars. We have already taken a few pics. He thinks it is the best thing since sliced bread.

Surely you're not serious. The kid is 5 not 15. A 60D with lens is heavy not to mention the cost for a camera that might get dropped.

5 year old's will be hard on a camera. Easily dropped, lost, etc. Just a simple point and shoot will do. He may be technically savvy, but a camera is different then a cell phone. Take him to a camera store and ask what would be good for him and let him try one. Don't go overboard at that age,

I was barely able to justify buying a Z50 for myself.

I figured miked46 and DavidPine were both kidding...
