Nikon D5300. When I put a newly formatted SD card in the camera, it begins numbering photos from it's beginning with the same file numbers as it used on previous cards. So when I download, it wants to replace existing files from earlier downloads. Help.

Interesting. I don't shoot Nikon but, I have 2 SD cards in use that I never format. I do move the files to a new folder on my desktop after each shooting session. The numbers are always sequential when I switch them.

Page 188-189 of the user manual details the file numbering set up.

You may want to start there.

I use NIkon's software to transfer my image files from card to computer. It works for every camera I own, Nikon or not. It gives me the option of renaming the files when I transfer them. That's been the ticket for me.

Somewhere in the D5300 menu, there is an option to restart the file numbering after every download, there is an option to continue the number sequence. I don't have my camera available right now (a D5100) so I can't tell you where it is. But I do remember it.

If you change that option to not start at 0001, it will allow you to continue until it reaches 9,999 files then it will restart at 0001 again.

If you use lightroom Classic (or perhaps other Database type programs) it is easy to circumvent problems by having the program add the date taken to the beginning of the file name (e.g. 20200617DSC6123) will eliminate any issues unless you take more than 9,999 shots in one day.

Put them in a new sequentially dated or numbered folder.
Easy

D5300 manual, page 188. Custom settings menu d-4, "file numbering sequence". turn on, to continue numbers after formatting card.

Checking the manual is step #1. Step #2 is the workflow suggestion here ^^^^^^.

Create a new folder to put your photos into on your destination drive. Then the individual file numbers don’t matter. I use the name convention of "yyyy mo text descriptor". You could also use dd if the day of the shoot matters. I do this on an external drive and then copy that folder to my PC for further use.

Use Nikon Transfer, part of Nikon View NX-i (free software) to download your images and rename them at the same time.

Or use a third party program like Downloader Pro from Breeeze systems. That is the program I use.

Using the Adobe downloader for Bridge/Photoshop it includes the date and lets you add a name and control the numbering. So I can have say have one days shots be 00 to 99, and another day or different camera on the same day be 101 to 200, any series picking up from the last 0000 to 9999 so I dont get 10,000 no 01 frames on my computer.

Using a program allows you to create file folders with names, dates etc and image file names and numbers so it is just about impossible to have one new image overwrite an older image and therefore delete it. Since I often shoot with two cameras at the same time, i want a camera code in my file folder name as it helps me find stuff later. This is one reason why I choose to rename at the time of importing to my computer.

Some like to do all of the renaming at time of import to your computer. Others do it after you have gone thru the images one time and deleted all of the obvious bad ones--out of focus, etc. (And they may use a special program just for this step, like Photo Mechanic.) And others may do it upon Export from a program like Lightroom so the files delivered to a client are in sequential order.

Here is some info to get you started on this topic.

I have both a D5300 and D7500, which both went to Antarctica with my son and I last December. The 5300 always begins each file name with DSC, but the 7500 let's you change it, which I did to AN7. Later in LR, it is easy to determine quickly which camera each shot came from. I will later post a Link to the resulting Flickr Collection in the gallery.

Why not just copy them to a folder with a name to identify the camera? Or at least create tags in LR to identify them.
