My PC offers that “icon tray” protocol, but it also offers “EJECT” as a menu choice when you right click the name of the card anywhere that it appears in the Windows File Explorer.
Choosing “EJECT” results in a notice that it is now “safe to remove the hardware” ... or occasionally a notice that the hardware is still in use and needs to be closed down before it can be ejected.

Eject isn’t like a pop-up toaster or a CD drive. Despite the “eject” jargon, cards must be pulled out by hand ;-)

Greetings all, are there any downsides to inserting the memory card directly into the PC slot vs using a memory card reader? Can I damage the memory card using this method? Thanks in advance.
I have a MacBook Pro and have inserted the card into the slot and have never had a problem.
I use Macs, but the idea is still the same -
My MacBook does not have a slot, so external is the only option
My iMac has the slot in a very inconvenient location (it is on the back of the unit), so I use an external usb hub with an integrated reader.
Both of the externals have the advantage of being able to accept full size and mini SD cards.

downsides? Only that you cannot stick that card reader in your pocket to take it somewhere else.
upsides? It's always there when you're at the computer. There is no cord that can wiggle loose. Mine also has a "fake" card to stick into the computer's card reader, making it impossible for the grandkids to stick something else in there.... My "external" card reader does not have that and it's amazing what the grandkids can manage to get into it!

With my computer, I prefer to use the chassis card slots, but the driver crashes about every third or forth time. Until I restart and driver reloads, I use a USB external card reader. I prefer the computer slot, if only it didn’t crash so often.

Who cares if they both work?
If you hear a "gulp" and there is a smile on your screen, then you know you have a problem.
I just built a new computer, AMD 5, 3200 CPU and MSI B450 MOBO. My old case has 3 front bays many new ones have a sleek appearance... NO bays. One bay on my build is a DVD, Another takes two hot-swap solid-state drives. This addition is for convenience; poping in a drive for drive backup monthly is a wise disaster prevention step.
Pertinent to your question of reading SD cards is my habit of marking cards as to which way is up insuring I do not try to force the card in incorrectly. Explained below: In my new build, the 3rd by is a card reader that will read every card ever thought of. I have no fear that the reader will damage my cards. To make sure that the cards are inserted correctly I use an Aluminium Marking Pen to indicate the upside. In a similar way, my cameras have a Pen dot on one side of the slot which corresponds to the mark on the cards. Necessary, NO, convenient, safe and fast, YES.
