Hi very one.
I have been an active reader for two years and have learned much. Thanks

I am now looking for a DAM program that I can use for pictures, PDF and word files.
This will allow me to organize all of my photo stuff so I can find things.
I have looked at ThumbsPlus but I know there are other programs that will do
the job in an independent manner so thanks for the help.

I am 70 years old have a Nikon D7200 and a Lumix DCM-FZ300 I love both for what they can do.
I do macro, wild life, and family. I started photography in 1968 and have work film until three years go.
Thank again for any enlightenment you can share.

I'm not sure what an "independent" DAM is. Not Adobe? Nevertheless, Lightroom Classic is the gold standard of DAM programs. I don't think it handles Word or PDF files, but I'm not sure any other DAMs do, either. Personally, I have 90,000 photos to manage, and a couple of hundred Word and PDF files. I can manage the latter two types very well with Windows Explorer.

I can't help with PDF and other files, but I don't create enough to have the need for asset managment.

DigiKam is a free DAM for image related files that works very well. The features can be found on the website if you are interested.

I agree with DWU2, Lightroom Classic is the gold standard.
With the keywording collections, etc. it easy to group and find photos.
There is the added benefit of having powerful post processing in the same software.
I've been using Facebook since I 'went digital' in 2012 and would not change.

I don't have any particular suggestions, just a comment to people reading this thread.

DAM means Digital Asset Management. It is not only for images. The Adobe DAM is probably the most familiar example to people on this forum, but it is oriented toward management of images. Digital assets can include any digital file. Images, word processing, programs, passwords, program configuration files, emails, data, etc.

A DAM program can manage the storage, documentation, access, and status of digital assets. In general it will be a database with some sort of searchable index. It will allow searches over one or many parameters.

I have a lot of stuff on my computer, but the largest pile is images, so I need a DAM to manage that. I have other digital assets but the volume is small enough that I can keep it in my memory (although it's aging). For that I use Lightroom. However, Lightroom only handles images, not other digital files, so the OP is looking for something else. He specifically mentioned PDFs and Word files, although he did say he wants to organize his photo stuff.

Yep, and I had to look it up because most of the general use (not just image related) software is designed around commercial use. Companies that generate a large amount of documents, and need the ability to centralize them for sharing/editing and security benefit most.

I did find a good link to some open source DAM software, but I have to mention the disclaimer that this software does not look like it was designed for ease of use on non-commercial systems, so your mileage may vary on how good the software will work.

Not at all. I'm 74yo and have been using ThumbsPlus for over 10 years. I used it to catalog and keyword index all my information assets, regardless of source or format. It is my Library of Things.

I think you should give it a trial.

I hope you find an answer. One of my “get rich schemes” is a Lightroom like program that handles most known document types where instead of photos the previews are PDFs of the First or title page but you still have keywords and collections as primary organizational tools. But the you select a document for edit it opens in the application that created it. Of course, at 79 I am only a year away from redefining get rich quick. On the other hand, my job for decades was involved specifying programs while leaving implementation to the software folks.

Adobe Bridge will let you manage ( but not edit) all of these files.

Photos and PDF Files can be viewed in Bridge, Word files not however.

There are a number of DAM applications out there. I would suggest doing a google search. I highly recommend your approach. You'll find a lot of folks recommending LR, etc. However, your approach of keeping the data separate from applications is a good idea. I wrote my own years ago and thus have kept our of the search for something else. Some of those DAM applications are free to download and use. So, I'd recommend doing your research on which one will work best for you.

Your comment inspired me to think about a pano/shift/stitch program a friend of mine and I wrote, at my suggestion, about 20 years ago. To this day, it still works a tad better than Ps's pano/stitch program. A few people have suggested marketing it. We could get rich. Yeah, and I think of all of the support we'd have to supply. Nope. I'd rather be doing photography as opposed to supporting people who are doing photography.

ACDSee handles images and pdf and a lot more. I am not an expert but have just bought it (lifetime licence not subscription). It seems to be very highly regarded as a DAM and my first impressions are that it is very good.
