Thanks for the tip. Looked up a photo - he looks thinner bodied than that, and has what appears to be a yellow tail. Could be! Maybe someone else will have an idea.
Overall shape and beak shape suggests a Oriole. Is he robin size or sparrow size. Since I can't come up with any other option that would be in Montana I would reluctantly, with great trepidation, make a guess that maybe it could be a Bullock's Oriole

I believe you have it - I have photographed the male on several occasions, but had not seen a female. The Cornell bird site has the female with no head markings and less vivid colors. Thanks - never thought of that!
