Hi everyone
I am looking at buying the cheaper third party spare batteries for my P950 but they all seem to be EN-EL20 and not the EN-EL20A that is required.
The EN-EL20 is listed as being suitable but the hand book says not to use them.
So can I or can I not use the EN-EL20.
Or can anyone recommend a good third party battery that's tried and tested and safe to use.
And thanks for any help you can give me on this matter.

You might want too try Wasabi battery for your camera, I use the for my canon camera’s no problems at all. This manufacturer has a excellent rating as well. See link

Short answer, yes you can use the standard EN-EL20 but won't get as many shots from it as the "a" version. I have a P1000 and use these 3rd party batteries without any problems. Have bought from this highly-rated company for many years for all my cameras without any difficulties. From what I could learn Nikon's EN-EL20 provides 900 mAh, they boosted it to 1100 with the "a" version. This Wasabi states their's is 1200, but all 3rd parties tend to overstate a little so probably comes in around that 1100 mark.

Buy and use the Nikon made batteries. If you use others you do so at your own risk. (And you may void the warranty on the camera.)

How do you if it’s under warranty. Nikon doesn’t make battries, there’s only a few companies in the orient that make them, most after market manufacturers make absolutely and perfectly good battries for most cameras.
Spend thousands on a camera and save $50.00 ops a battery that could destroy your days shooting or your camera.

Have read this argument many times, have never seen a post here on UHH that it has happened. Can we assume you never allow your doctor or pharmacy to give you generic drugs to save large co-pays?
You do what you want. I spend enough time and money and don't need any extra problems. I know I can call the manufacture and get support. My bag today (at 4:00AM) for a shoot cost enough for a good used car. So I could have saved enough to buy the gas I used today. WHY
You can also save money when you go out by not having a drink or no desert.

Does your bag also contain OEM-supplied memory??
Being paranoid, or maybe just risk adverse, I use OEM batteries for both my "in camera" and multiple spare batteries carried with me. I do have a couple of Wasabi batteries as backups to my spares.
While the price difference is non-trivial, for me, it's the "time" risk. When traveling a couple of months at a time in foreign locations, it's a one time opportunity as I don't plan on returning. While I start in the city I finished in the previous year, I don't want to backtrack but continue on... OEM batteries just provide less worries for me.
NO Buy Quality
Hay go buy what you want.

Silly reply, especially last line, didn't answer the question. And, one could call the mfg of battery I recommended and get support too. In fact batteries have a 3-yr warranty vs Nikon's 1 yr. Glad you can over-spend for accessories, maybe OP did not want to do so, buying quality ones for $12 vs $49.
Not silly in my mind. People who spend thousands on a camera and save $30.00 on other stuff to go with it. Battery warranty is not it. It's if you have a problem with your camera and it is detected by the camera company. I use Canon now but had a Nikon and they challenged me on the brand of memory card. Found the camera was defective and replaced it. But first refused to as I did not have NIKON'S APPROVED memory card. Love me Canons and support.
Do what you want and "Stardust" you can blow your "dust" up your ---.
