Sounds like you've got peeps in Silver City who'll see you around. But from me, welcome to Silver City! It's where I live and take most of my photos. If your friends are boring or unimaginative, I can make some suggestions for good photo ops...like Gallinas Canyon in the Black Range (Hwy 152 east).

I'm not sure the Caverns are yet open and if they are they might take a few hours to check out. The Ft Huachuca museum also, but I drove the Benson to Dragoon to close to Douglas where you can see some of the border wall over to Bisbee and then over to Sierra Vista and back to Benson in about 6hr with stops for photos. It would help if you made a two or three day adventure of this if you were to take in the Cochise Stronghold, Ft Huachuca and the Caverns.
Lots of goodies around here, not to mention the wildlife. Be careful driving at dusk into the night and watch out for deer, coyotes, and Javelina.

Stop by Butterfield RV Resort in Benson about 45 miles east of Tucson on I-10 on your way to NM. It's the cutoff to Tombstone

I usually stay at the Space Age Motel in Gila Bend. It's a great part of history.

In 1967 after graduating from college in Atlanta GA, I drove from Atlanta to San Diego for a job. I stayed at the Space Age Motel in Gila Bend and 53 years ago it was very good.

I still have stayed in Gila Bend recently. But my life style has changed, I now am a Full Time RVer and Gila Bend has a wonderful RV Park. It's the Gila Bend KOA, very nice for a desert RV Park and the people are wonderful. I have probably stayed there about 6 or 8 times when going between Southern California and Benson AZ.
