Nikon USA is owned by Nikon, and I am quite sure Nikon USA offers an important part of their profit structure, so they are taking all possible steps to stop profit "leakage". Personally, I feel they should be required by law to offer service on any product they manufactured for at least some certain period of time. I don't have a problem with them not honoring a gray market warranty but they should certainly offer service at fair prices. And updates and recalls to products offered for free should be given to all regardless of where the camera or equipment was purchased.

Yes. I am surprised that Nikon's handling of parts doesn't get them in anti-trust trouble.

3rd party glass was designed to work with many DSLR and Mirrorless camera models. Compliance and updates continue to be a problem with them. (this happens more than you would think possible) As long as the consumer of 3rd party glass understand this when they buy these lenses I guess that's OK.
Recently a problem came up with certain Tamron lenses not working on the new Nikon D6. Tamron was forced to reach out to it's consumers with the following statement. BUYERS BEWARE.

Dear Tamron product users and potential purchasers. Thank you for your continued support of Tamron products. We would like to announce you that we have confirmed that some of our lenses do not work properly with the Nikon D6 released on the Japanese market on June 5, 2020.

Affected models:

Tamron SP 35mm F/1.4 Di USD (Model F045) for Nikon
Tamron 17-35mm F/2.8-4 Di OSD (Model A037) for Nikon
Symptom:

1. AF does not work when the camera power is turned on after mounting the lens with the camera power off.
2. AF does not work when the camera returns from sleep mode.

We are currently working on the cause of those issues and will inform you of updated information in our website. We sincerely apologize to all users and potential purchasers for any inconvenience this issue may cause.

I own three Tamron lenses and eight Nikon lenses. Very satisfied with both the Tamron and the Nikon glass. No problem buying non-OEM especially if the price is right.

Future incompatibility is nothing new or unexpected, it's a choice if we take this risk or not.

But from my own observations over the years I have read far less about actual 3rd party incompatibility issues someone has had than failures someone has had from camera manufacturers lenses.

Hi Bob
I certainly do not disagree w/ your post.
What I was trying to say & not particularly well, is that Nikon has limited the viability of buying used equipment by not publishing USA serial numbers. KEH has contributed to it by not giving the S/N to a potential buyer. I understand KEH not wanting to do this additional effort & if they did it would result in increased cost to the consumer. Nikon has long been regarded as a well built, high quality, robust product that commands a high resale value. But for me, I have been put in the position of no longer wanting to buy Nikon used & I don't want to take the hit to my budget to buy new. I might add that Authorized Camera Repair in Illinois doesn't balk at working on gray market Nikon. However they will eventually run out of parts. Therefore a large part of the reason for my switch to a Sony a 7 lll & FE lenses. I feel betrayed by Nikon after all these decades starting in the '60s.
I hope this is a clarification of my previous post
Thank you, Jay
BTW I now see that this subject is not in alignment w/ the OP. May I move my 1st post & Bob Locher's & this post to start a new thread? If so, how?

Thanks Jay. Actually, you did a good job making your point in your first comment, and re-enforced it in your reply. I was pretty much seconding your comments and expanding a little. We are very much in agreement I think.

Cheers

Bob

Hay Bob
I just noticed we're practically neighbors.
Do you think that I should attempt to take the last comments made by you & I to start start a new thread?

Yes, it seems we are! And I would have been glad of the now moribund move to move our county into Idaho. Maybe next year once the madness passes we can get the movement started again.

Actually, I suspect the matter has been covered a few months back. But I think it could easily be started as a new thread. I think the best way is to start the thread yourself as a new thread, closely following your original message, and then I will respond with the thrust of my message.

Let me know if you want to do this...

Cheers

Bob

The 800 lb gorilla in the room is the fact that high end 3rd party glass often requires the vendor's custom device... i.e. Sigma Dock... Tamron tap in console etc...

While they sell these at a low price the major caveot is you can only "tune" the optic for a SINGLE body!
What a joke... I have a half dozen bodies and I'm not about to buy a half dozen copies of a third party's optic.
I shot Nikon Pro bodies which allows me to "Fine Tune" up to 20 lenses... and it actually can tell that I have two 80-200mm f/2.8 push pulls (the first and second D version). Nikon's Fine Tune recognizes both lens as separate... How cool is that!

Nope, third party glass simply doesn't work for me... albeit it might work for you!
I have the Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 DX lens that doesn't require the Sigma Dock and is a super optic...
Nikon sued Sigma over that lens's Image Stabilization as a result Sigma discontinued it to settle out of court... I also have the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 DX lens which is far better than the "classic" AF 35-70mm f/2.8D and it has awesome Image Stabilization... the new Sigma Art glass simply too heavy and the 50-100mm f/1.8 lacks IS a.k.a. VR, what was Sigma thinking? However Nikon simply refuses to produce high quality DX glass in an attempt to force users to buy FX... how thoughtless... DX is a viable platform, ask any sport shooter...

Nope I'm a hardcore Nikkor kinda of guy... love my f/2.8 push/pull 80-200mm that don't suffer from focus breathing... amazingly sharp... gota love those vintage Nikkors...

All the best you guys and gals... And remember that the things you own will likely end up owing you...
Stay safe, wear a mask in public and practice social distancing... this will all be over when a vaccine becomes available... soon I pray...

I too have glass from Tamron and Rokinon. I've also had Tokina in the past and liked them all. These lenses have worked well for me and for the money have to be a great value. The Rokinon 14mm f2.8 out performs the Canon 14mm f2.8 for astrophotography. Granted you give up auto focus but the Nikon version is available with a chip for AE. With the Canon costing more than four times as much for my use I'll stick with the Rokinon.

Hi Bob
After you mentioned that the subject had been covered previously, I searched UHH for:”Nikon repair parts & buying used” And came upon this; "Buying used, buying used grey market?" This was a very informative thread. I don't feel that I have anything more to contribute.
I've also discovered, from this thread that I have quite a bit of Gray market Nikon Gear:-(
Thanks Jay

I not aware of any US Anti-trust action in the past few years. Europe yes, but not in the US. Am I missing something? Probably have, just not newsworthy. JD

No, neither have I.

I was just speculating that Nikon’s tight hold on the supply of repair parts is the kind of thing that can lead to problems with the U.S. government.

Thanks Jay. I think I have made my views clear - Nikon's behavior is totally unconscionable.
Let's hope your gear holds up without problems.
Cheers
Bob
