Can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. I’ve read the instruction manual multiple times, page 232 -233. It states, to push button circled here in yellow on the picture. Then toggle selector switch.
No histogram appears
Does anyone know what dumbo here is doing wrong?

Don't have the 850 - you can get to the histogram on the 810 via the command dial - various options.

First dumb question, are you looking at an image in the window on the back of the camera?

If so, start back on page 229. That will give you the steps to cycle through to reach the window with the histogram.

Yes. Looking at images in the window in back of camera.
Have been thru the info on page 229. If a single image is on the screen the left / right arrows moves photos forward or backwards. The up down arrows do nothing. If more than one image displayed, the up down arrows will then shift a highlight around the 4 or 9 or more photos displayed

Try programming the center button in the multi-selector to display the histogram.

Thanx. That worked. But shows a black/white version. No color shown. Is that normal?

Look up Steve Perry Nikon histogram on youtube have your camera in hand, Steve explains step by step how he sets up viewing the histogram on a Nikon camera. Steve is very easy to follow along with, he's also a member here.

I subscribe to his youtube channel and have purchased some of his ebooks, they are well worth purchasing.

Good Luck!

You’re pressing the wrong button. The “center” button the manual is referring to is the big round button on the right with the up, down, sideways button. Display the image and toggle the “up” arrow on that bigger button. Do it several times and watch what happens.

You have to go to the Playback Menu (the top option), then <Display Mode>, and enable which of several options you want to be able to see when you review your images. Once you have done that, you can scroll through those options with the Up & Down arrow keys on the MultiSelector.

You need to turn it on in the playback display options. Press the menu button on the back of the camera and go to the main Playback Menu option at the very top. Scroll down to Playback Display Options and click. You'll find a list under there you where you can "check" the options you want to see. Just highlight the item and press the right side of the multi-selector to choose. It sounds like you're looking for RGB histogram. Hit OK when you're done or it won't stick.

Now, pop off a shot and hit play. Using the top or bottom of the multi-selector, scroll through your image view options. The RBG histogram will be one of the screens.

On the back right side of your 850 is your selector wheel. Just toggle up or down with the selected photo visible on your LCD display and you will see your histogram and other valuable information.

You are welcome. I see that Steve answered you about the same time that I did.

By the way...you probably noticed that one of the options is "None." That may not mean what you think it means. For a long time, I thought it meant "no display" or something like that. What it actually enables is a display in the rotation with nothing but your image displayed. No file number, no date and time, nothing else either. I find it very useful to be able to quickly verify composition without any distractions.
