I shoot with the Canon T2i and want to start Geo-tagging. Could I get some suggestions as what to use and if you are tagging what system are you using?

Thanks
Pappy

Hi. I have a Garmin. What GPS Unit you have won't make much difference. I came across a program on the internet called GPicSync. It will tag your pictures from the 'track' of your GPS unit. its free. Do a search for GPicSync. I don't want to send you to a bad site.

I use GeoTagPhotos app for iPhone. I believe it costs $ 2. You set your camera time to match your iPhone and simply start the app during a photoshoot. At the end I simply download the resultant gpx file and my LR4 matches the photos with the location. Very simple.

I use a app in my ipad call geo album, it is free and very easy to use. it put pin on the map and you can pin point all the place wher I shoot the photos. I want to find a simple app that can track my path of my gps as a log and mark it on the map, if I get something like this will help me a lot when I make a hiking trip. did anyone has some suggestion?
thanks.

My "method" does need a bit of time on my part, but the only reason for geo-tagging some of my photos is to remember many years later where in the world I took that photo.
So I got a cheap hiking gps and synchronised the clock time with that of my camera. When I want to take a photo in an unfamiliar place (road, moumtains, park, whatever), I take a gps reading of the coordinates.
Back home, I make a list of the image numbers assigned by the camera, combine them with the coordinates, and if I know the name of the area, I include that as well.
I know, there are easier ways, but this works for me - I really don't have that with many "tagged" images when we arrive home.

Best by far is a tool by Friedemann Schmidt called GeoSetter. It takes a folder of images and a gpx track for that session and writes the geolocation in each of the image files. If your camera clock is not set to GMT (sorry, I'm old, and it will ALWAYS be GMT to me!), you can determine the offset and correct image times in this app.

Geosetter is also the BEST metadata editor I've ever used. I can write a description for one image and paste it to other selected images. When I copy and paste, I have to select the specific data types I am writing so nothing else changes.

I have a little qStarz 1000 somethingorother that i carry on my belt. The Garmin unit that displays tracks is attached to a pack strap and when I take the pack off to wander around 10 or 20 meters away, the qStarz is always close to the camera. That said, its accuracy is no better than 5m so it rarely matters.

Best thing about geosetter is the price. If you like it (you will), send Schmidt some money.

Great question Pappy; I myself struggle with this. I even asked someone at a very professional and reputable camera store in Calgary about what he uses and his answer was . . . NOTHING! He thought that adding GPS data to your pictures will expose locations of your "secret photos". I don't get it.

I keep hearing good things about the Jobo unit which fits on your DSLR's hot shoe. I may break down and try it out.

your can edit the exif data, if you want this to be secret.
But I would say in case of emergency, this data might save your save, and 10 yrs down the road, this might be the only way to tell your grandson, where you did go before.

Good point avenging. Does your response mean that you use GPS tagging? If so, which system do you use?

I think it has to be hand-held so that the tracks can be down loaded to computer, unless it records tracks and can be down loaded. Isn't the Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT for auto?

Canon does make a GPS attachment. It MIGHT work on your camera.

I have the ipad2, and I add a flex dataplan that is $17 for 250m of data, use the camera on a the ipad and turn on the location service. once enable all the photos will includel the gps data embed, if I view it using geo album, it will show me exactly where I did go before.

I can also use dell voice to this as a phone to call anywhere in canada, or google voice to call US.

The next thing that I want to do is to find a small device, such as Samsung galaxy note or the new Samsung galaxy camera to take better photos, since I will use this for hiking.
Want to find a good app that I can plan the trip in advance on the topo map, get all the distance and elevation profile. with the help of gps to track the direction, and record the track info, in case I go off trail. Take photos along the way. And Enjoy all the photos back home.
I also want to find a nice monopod with the option of small tripod on the base and in case I can also use this as walking stick too. Is there anything like this available?
thanks.
