Hello let me introduce myself. My name is Norman Goering You can call me Storman. I need some information
Is there a guide, book or anything to help one set up web page to sell photos and how to protect your rights with your photos. I will probably retire soon and would like information so I can possibly add a little to my puny retirement. Any info that you have would be appreciated.

There's a series of "dummies" books, and there's one called "Creating Web Pages for Dummies". Don't be insulted by the title. There are superb books. There's a whole series. When I upgraded to my D7200, I got the "D7200 for Dummies", and it got me going on the 7200 fast, and I took it from there.

There is also providers that offer easy set up like , Square Space. Makes the process pretty easy from what I can tell from the advertisements I have seen.

Welcome to our forum!

Try Google - for free. As for protecting your rights, that will involve paying a lawyer. Anything posted online can be "stolen," and going to court is expensive.

Zenfolio is another provider that has predesigned websites that you can customize. They are specifically for photographers with everything you need to sell photos from marketing tools to professional labs to do your printing. Not just photos but everything from greeting cards to key chains. You will need the marketing tools it’s one thing to post pictures online for sale but you aren’t going to sell many unless you have a way to drive people to your images. Pretty simple turn key interface including the e-commerce. Costs about $150 a year plus a small percentage of the sale for handling the transaction. Smug mug is another one that a lot of photographers use too. When all is said and done the run about the same money wise.
Another option is to post your images on a much bigger site that people go to for images. Kind of like amazon for photos. Etsy is one that comes to mind. Another is 500 px.
I know I am not giving you manuals as you asked. There are infinite resources on how to but first you need to explore the different options and decide which might work the best for what you want to do then you can zero in on the how to for that particular way you choose.

As for protecting your rights to images. Good luck with that. You hold the copyrights for every picture you take. However unless you register an image with the US copyright office Which costs money you have a very hard time almost impossible seeking damages. There are several tools available to help you keep your images from being stolen but there isn’t any that can actually stop someone from stealing if they want the image. They are kind of like bicycle locks some better than others but none are infallible if a thief wants to take it. Even worse most teenagers have enough knowledge to grab your images no matter how you protect them. Your best bet is know your rights but then don’t worry about it. In the end the cost of pursuing a copyright infringement could exceed its value.
Best of luck and Happy retirement.

Someone mentioned Zenfolio, there is also Smugmug which I have used to sell amateur sports images but you need the portfolio option. I no longer sell on Smugmug and only have the basic plan to store images. The portfolio plan has watermark protection which is essential to protect the images but it costs US$216 pa, will you sell enough to cover that?
Another option might be to find websites that sell a unique product and shoot for that, they will take a commission based on sales and may avoid the upfront investment that Smugmug or Zenfolio require.
Another option is to shoot for stock images but the rewards are low and it requires an industrial effort to take a lot of images to make it worthwhile. I used to do this as well.
Good luck

There is a watchdog company that scans the internet for your photos and alerts you if someone has used your photos. You have to pay for the service but it would be less expensive than a lawyer. I have not used them but would if I were doing a lot of internet photo sales or promotion.

Since the OP is looking for information, it might be handy to provide the name of the company that provides this service.

A number of professional photographers who have a channel on YouTube use Square Space. It has a free trial period. One of the great things about it is, you upload an image to it once, and it automatically creates the proper format of your image for all the different media sites for you to properly display your images, plus smartphones, tablets, etc.

Welcome to the Forum, and good luck with your business.

I strongly recommend www.smugmug.com. It costs about $60/yr but you can upload unlimited number of images, use their template for a web page, use your own domain name and sell your images from there. Your images will be protected from stealing, too. They recently acquired Flickr so it is a very solid and reputable site.

Fine Art America is another one. There are several other excellent sites that are set up to do this, too. They’re much easier to use than developing your own site.
