I am still gainfully employed, so I don't volunteer...yet...we'll see whenever retirement comes. My wife, however, volunteers for a lot of charities over the years: (1) The Clothes Closet, which provided school clothes for low income families, (2) Painting curb address numbers for our entire subdivision of about 60 homes free of charge...told neighbors that wanted to pay her, to give those funds to some local charity, (3) Sole Hope - made shoes for thousands of vulnerable people in Uganda who suffer from a crippling parasite called jiggers. http://www.solehope.org/. Here's a video of my wife cutting out one complete pair of shoes....12 minutes condensed to 3 minutes...

My wife and I commented this morning that if not for Covid, today would have been our biweekly volunteer day at the local food shelf. Which caused me to wonder, since it’s my guess that a large percentage of UHH’ers may be retired, where do/did UHH’ers volunteer? I hope this very unscientific survey showcases the variety of ways one can volunteer at any age.
I’ll start - over the course of a year, at the local food shelf; at Habitat for Humanity; and for the National Park Service.

I've been volunteering with a local food bank for a couple of years by delivering food on a weekly basis to needy clients. However, I have curtailed my deliveries since the covid-19 situation started out of an abundance of caution since I often have to enter their homes. Hopefully the covid situation will resolve soon and I'll be able to get back to my deliveries.

I have volunteered for years at a privately-owned, no-kill feline shelter - Cat Adoption Team, in Sherwood, Oregon. I foster cats and kittens in my home, caregive at the shelter (cleaning kennels, feeding, socializing), and do transports when we take in cats from overcrowded shelters in certain areas. Prior to shelter-in-place, I worked there once or twice a week. Now they allow only staff in house to care for the few we have and tend the hospitalized cats. If fosters need supplies, I ferry around supplies. They have worked out a no-contact adoption protocol that is ramping up. Kitten season is upon us!

I volunteered as a Santa once at a pet store for pet photos with Santa. Only one person - an 8-year-old girl - pegged me as a female! It was great fun.

There was a time when many Santas were actually women under the beard and suit.
I always tell people that children do not view Santa Claus through their eyes but rather through their hearts.
The expensive suit and the real beard and all the other trappings are for the parents.
I can wear a sweatshirt and jogging pants and still be seen by the children as Santa Claus.

I volunteer with my professional emergency management association (25+ years) - Past President, Certification Commissioner, Lead Instructor, Editorial Committee Chair, monthly newsletter author, and mentor to younger emergency managers. I run (25+ years) a volunteer open-source terrorism/intelligence list-serve. In addition, I volunteer with my older neighbors (15+ years) fixing their computers, lifting and moving heavy objects, doing minor chores, watching their dogs and houses, driving them to appointments, and doing their local shopping.

Was a regular volunteer at annual arts & and crafts fair, called Lazy Daze. Finally had to give it up due to vision/ hearing issues. I generally worked the main info tent, and that became impossible.

Also, was on Crime Stoppers board with local police dept, and also served with the Citizens Assisting Police org.

I have a local food pantry I started volunteering at one day a week since the Covid. All very safe - clients stay in their car, pop the trunk and we load it up with food. They tell me their demand is up 30-40% since the stay at home orders. I’m not retired, but working from home is not a full time thing right now, so helping out where I can. With luck, I’ll keep doing this 1/2 day a week once I’m back to work full time. Very rewarding.

Wow - the impact of so many people working to help others! I'm happy (as usual) to be in the company (even if virtual) of people making a difference! The nicest people are volunteers - thanks to all of you!

I volunteered with a AARP-sponsored program to help K - 3rd grade kids with their reading. My heart was in the right place but I had to quit after my third day on the job. It just wasn't for me. I couldn't get the kids to focus. It was just too much for me. I give all the credit in the world to teachers who can control a classroom of 25 small kids. I couldn't do it with three at a time.

I would still like to help people with literacy or math. I'm thinking maybe when this is all over I'll try working with people new to our country in learning English or studying for their citizenship tests. I enjoyed political science and history even though I made my living with math and technology.
