I bought my D810 at a time that Nikon EN-EL15 batteries were not available locally, so I bought one of the ProMaster "equivalents" that my camera store was selling as an alternative. While it powered the camera just fine, it would never charge to 100%, and its exposure counter would not (and still will not)reset after recharging. It also self-discharges much more quickly than my Nikon batteries.

It was only $10 less than an authentic battery. While it continues to provide power, I do not believe that the tiny savings is worth the loss of functionality.

I now have multiple bodies that use that same battery type, including a couple of D500s. Only in an extreme emergency would I buy a non-Nikon battery again.

I purchased two Promaster batteries during the Holidays last year from the local camera shop. They didn’t carry Nikons but I needed them right away. Turned out ok but only $10 less than OEM Nikons. Had them order the next one directly from Nikon. Arrived at the shop 3 days later. Prefer OEMs.

Do you think the camera maker knows more about batteries than the battery maker, or that the battery maker would make their own brands with inferior specifications.

Your opinion is based on marketing hype not reality. Discerning buyers are not persuaded by what the marketing boys put out.

Just one of hundreds of articles about the dangers of third party batteries. Interesting, did not find anything about the dangers of OEM batteries, interesting isn't it.

Some of the bigger concerns about using third party batteries are:

Leakage.
Swelling causing difficulty inserting or removing.
Shorter useful life than OEM equivalent.
Incompatibility with camera and/or OEM charger.
Incompatibility due to firmware updates.
Voiding your camera’s warranty.

The same manufactures that produce third party batteries also make batteries for computers and other products. And guess what, there is a problem there too. Imagine that.

O boy, yet another of over hundreds of articles about the dangers of third party batteries. Hundreds of them, and not one about the dangers of OEM batteries, imagine that, I wonder why?

I have bought third party batteries for Nikon and Olympus batteries. They work just fine. I only by third party batteries from B&H or Adorama, however.

I have 2 third party batteries for my D7100 and the OEM. That said, I read in another post where someone said that if a third party battery were to leak in your camera any warranty you have may be voided. I don't know but from now on I will stick with OEM batteries.

Hello. Before someone tells me to search for prior posts, I did. But, did not find any relevant posts. BTW, the search feature is not very robust.

Now on to the question. I recall prior threads discussing 3rd party batteries for Nikon. The hardliners stating “no, no never, you’re clearly foolish to even think about it!” But other quieter voices reported their experiences, good and bad.

It would be great if any of the quieter voices would share their experiences.

Many Thanx

PS. If there were fewer hoggers that seem to subscribe only to pounce upon those asking questions, posts would not require a preface to discourage the typical flack one receives in response to a sincerely phrased question.

For my D850 I stick to Nikon bateries. I used both with my D810. I had one Nikon fail a d one aftermarket fail.

I have had problems with my D500 showing, Err occasionally. I use a third party battery in the grip. And suspect that's the problem.

FWIW; An EN EL-15 Vivitar battery will work in my D7200, but not in my D500.

I am a digital shooter since early 90’s and can’t remember how many cameras and batteries I have owned, but tons. I primarily use proprietary batteries, but also augment with 3rd party, Wasabi and others, not the cheap ones. The only battery that EVER showed any defect was an Oly, when the case cover came off. Ott, I have never experienced any battery failure of any kind. I think that speaks tons regarding using 3rd party batteries.

I have used third party batteries with no big problems. However, I always read the customer reviews before buying. If you see several hundred positive reviews, then that is most likely a good battery. However, if there are no reviews or several bad ones, go elsewhere.

I couldn't agree more about the preface statement. That being said I have both OEM and 3rd party Batteries (Pro-Master) for my D500, and previously on my 5300 and have had no problem with either, (I have about 200,000 clicks) between the 2 cameras.

Since I went serious digital almost all my cameras have been Nikons. After retiring I decided to save money and buy used gear from camera dealers. I noticed that the used cameras never contained Nikon batteries. My experience has been:
No Lithium battery has ever broken down or caused damage in my cameras.
Nikon brand batteries hold a fuller charge for more years than the other brands.
The secondary brands that came in cameras continue to work at a slightly diminished capacity.
A real third party brand I tried started to not fully charge after 2.5 years, was down to half charge after 3.5 years.
My conclusion: Nikon batteries are worth full price; other brands are worth half of that.

I have 5 Nikon bodies that all use En-EL14 batteries. I have bought five (5) Nikon branded batteries on line - all marked Nikon and I cannot find any difference in the external markings. HOWEVER several have performed poorly as to the amount of charge and retention of charge after a month or less storage. I have one that is a total failure and have it marked to go to Nikon for examination when the service center reopens.
