I was thinking the same thing. If that was sharper it would be easy to pinpoint the year.

If that photo was taken in 1964 it must have been before March 27 1964 because of the earthquake ripped the hell of 4th street. I went up to Alaska, Anchorage In May of that year. I work for a oil exploration company lot work after that happened.

Those people don’t look like they’re dressed for March in Anchorage, although the fur rendezvous is late February to early March.

In Europe the animal would be called a "Reindeer". The same species in Alaska and Canada would be called "Caribou"

The caribous I saw in Alaska were bigger than the reindeer we have in Finland so I believe they are different species. But then again, people are bigger (being PC and not calling them fat) in US.

This image was emailed to Brian at Stewart's Photo, in Anchorage, Alaska, quite a while back.

Brian would like to know more about the image, such as the name and contact information of the photographer and who is the person in the picture. Any other information would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any information, would you please either post it here, or contact Brian Weeks, at Stewart's Photo, 531 West 4th Avenue, Anchorage, AK. 99501. Or by email: brian@stewartsphoto.com or by telephone: 907.272.85.81.

Thank you.

I have no idea who took that pic but it was definitely taken before the March 1964 quake!

I was thinking about 58. With a full restoration those are worth a small fortune (Well over $100,000) today. It could also be a Chrysler. Look at the pinkish color. I had a 58 De Soto with that color.

I believe it is a 1957 Cadillac Coupe Deville. (see pic)
The car the guy holding the leash is leaning against is a 1955 Mercury Monterey. (see pic)

My guess is that this was taken around 1960-62. After the earthquake in ‘64, downtown Anchorage looked a lot different in places, including a lot of 4th Ave. Stewart’s Photo, however, is the same today as it was back then.

By the way, there are reindeer in Alaska. They are “ranched” in western Alaska by Alaska native people. The wild ones are the caribou and are larger. Also, just outside of Palmer, there is a reindeer farm that is a popular place for people to visit.

Looks like a ‘58 Cadillac. In 1960 the Cadillac got those crazy big “wings.”

I think you’re right about the years.

My mother learned how to drive in a pink & white '56 DeSoto (with a 354 Hemi, I still remember her taking corners on 2 wheels, not on purpose, but we all lived). Anyway, I remember what all the Chryslers And DeSotos looked like from then, and it's a Cadillac. It was probably already worth a fortune when that photo was taken.

I believe if you compare the 57 Coupe Deville to the 58 Coupe Deville you will see the fins on the 57 are much more like those in the OP's picture. Yellow car is 58 Red car is 57.

You’re right. They’re very close in shape, but the taillights tell the difference. Thanks for the correction. In the photo, it’s easy to mix them up.

That was shot on film (probably Kodachrome) and scanned (look at the dust spots) maybe 50 or more years ago. It's not likely you can track down the photographer or the subjects.

Yeah, look at the cars!

North Americans have two names for Rangifer tarandus: reindeer and caribou. They are the same species but domestication has selected for smaller size in the domestic strain. Just look at dogs if you want to doubt what domestication can do. Wolves, Chihuahuas and Mastiffs are all the same species - Canis lupus.

I have Ektachrome slides roughly that time period - the blue white balance is typical of them. My Kodachrome slides are warmer, even though they had color shifts.

You need Topaz AI. Next word is "World".
