My need for a new telescope

My fiance keeps saying I do NOT need a fourth telescope. I can take pictures of large nebulae and close galaxies. I need another with more focal length to take images of planets and distant galaxies. JOIN my fight against this stupidity.....LOL. I promise only on more unless I win the lottery. My farthest galaxy to shoot is about 19 million light years away. Thus the reason I need more focal length and a new telescope. One light year equals 5.88 trillion miles X 19 million light years. Equals a LOT of zeros. So a long away from us, thus verifying why I need at least one more telescope...LOL. This is my hobby. I don't subject her to sports. I have better things to do with my life than watching grown men play with their balls.

If, as your fiance, she is telling you that you don't need a new telescope, can you imagine what she will tell you after she becomes your wife?

Well, here's the problem with your promise. There is always one more dark sky object just beyond your current reach which you could see if you only had more reach. I'd say be satisfied with what you've got and enjoy life in the daytime more.

Why not do a 'replacement' ? Take your least used, least useful telescope and sell it ? Will help fund the new one and not add to space needed for storage.

OK, but what did you take that photo with?

I have but a lowly 3.5-inch Questar; been thinking myself that I need something with more reach.

I would advise that when married you budget so you each have some discretionary money that is yours to spend. If she wants to spend $100 every six weeks on nails and another $100 every 8 on hair, and $5.40 each morning on latte, but you bite your own nails, make your own coffee, and go to best cuts, you now have several thousand dollars per year for gear.

I understand you can rent time on the Hubble for clear shots of deep space objects. Might be a bit pricey, though.

Slamming sports, I see. To each his own, and there’s room for everything in life.

After having been married 3 times, I can unequivocally state that women change after marriage. Mostly not for the better.

In the words of a departed authority on the subject - John Dobson - why don't you just build one?

SonyBug no disrespect but after 3 marriages why do you say women change? Is it possible YOU are the problem? 2 sides to every story, we have your opinion, they may have a different one.

I tend to agree with the logic - Tell her you are willing to "let go" of one of your telescopes so you can begin the building or acquisition of the next one. Sadly, from the practical side, each increase in telescope size is almost 10X more expensive then the size below it. 6", 8", 10" to truly astronomical!

You didn't share what size you want to buy/build - what is next?

I have 6" and 8" Celestrons, but must drive at least 2 hours to get to somewhere with dark enough sky to really use them.

Or, is there something she feels she really wants/needs. Can you help 'indulge' her if she agrees to your 'necessity'?
