1965 50mm f/2 Summicron vs. a 2015 Nikon 50mm f/1.8G
As the old saying goes Japanese lenses have contrast. German lenses have sharpness.

I know a few more old sayings ...

There was NO need for any careful comparisons to an SLR type 28. ....
Fortunately neither of my 28mm lenses are pancakes.
But that reminds me that I have a couple of Voigtlander 40mm lenses that are still being made. One is for the Nikon SLR mount and the other for the Leica M. They are both relatively compact but nether is a pancake. I'll test them along with the two 28mm lenses.
I think that both lenses will confirm our suspicions.

Almost. But neither the 40mm and 28mm test showed any significant difference in sharpness, even in the corners. This is probably because the DOF was deeper.
I tested the Zeiss 28mm f/2.8 M (2013) against the Nikon 28mm f/2.8 (1991). The Nikon showed a tiny amount of correctable CA in the white fences, the Zeiss did not.
I tested a Voigtlander 40mm f/1.4 Nokton M (2017) against the Voigtlander 40mm f/2 Ultron for Nikon (2017) and got the same difference I got with the 28mm for sharpness and CA (the Nikon version had a tiny amount of CA).
