I keep everything in subject\date directories.
Pretty much keeps it organized for me.

The price one has to pay for free stuff.

I used to organize my slides by subject, and I carried that organization forward when I switched forward to digital - I just use the operating system’s ability to create a tree of folders
Yep, I do, too. Basic organizing is done in my computer by making folders for photos that are related, and higher level folders to group those, etc. Import into Lightroom for post processing retains that organization. Then, for posting to my photo hosting service, Flickr, I regroup photos into Albums according to my plan and upload. After the photos are resident in Flickr, I go through the Photostream and select photos with a specific common attribute (flora, fauna, motorcycles, whatever) and create special Albums within Flickr for them. (This works because Flickr allows a photo to be part of more than one Album--it is not necessary to upload it twice. An Album can be part of more than one Collection, too, and a Collection can be part of more than one higher level Collection. The flexibility of their hierarchical structure is wonderful.) I like being able to categorize photos in more than one way simultaneously--perhaps as part of a trip, by time or location, and also by some common feature or type.

I, too, use the operating system's ability to create of tree of folders organized by both subject & date. It is so much easier to do this using ACDSee which I have used for years. Not free, but not expensive. Use LR for editing, then export edited images to my folders which are, of course, backed up 3 times. I am surprised no Hogger has mentioned ACDSee. I do not use it for post processing. Just DAM.

I wasn't using the pay service, just the free and they kept bugging me that I had maxed out. I don't use LR or Adobe so wanted something simple and ended downloading Photo Organizer yesterday...it looks like it will work just fine. Also, got tired of putting everything in folders and having to search and go through them to find what I needed.

Keyword, keyword, keyword.

I use ACDSEE Ultimate. It has an organizer and good editor. It is easy to catalog photos and has a super search engine. I need it because I have 10,000+ (mostly bad) photos. Cannot use subject folders because multi subjects and multi location

Having a background in computer programming I wrote my own years ago. This was way before digital. It's continued to work through digital as well.

The nice thing about it is that it is a graphic editor independent bit of software. As the web developed, I moved it to a web server and can now access it anywhere I can get to the web.

I use Photos on a Mac
Works fine for an amateur. Costs 10/mo but I can use it for anything I want to store. It’s quirky and awful, if you need to download everything, but I also store the Photos library locally. Fingers are crossed.🤞

I've always used the Organizer in PSE in whatever version I had. Works fine for me.

These threads are always interesting. I am amazed by the variety and creative ways folks solve this issue. I’ve evolved to LR. No, it’s not free but it more than meets my needs.

When I want something to keep track of things for me I might consider, but I've evolved past dependence.
