Why don't my older Auto Focus lenses work with my Nikon Z7

I know it's late, but this is one reason why the Hogs should be consulted about their experiences with equipment. I also could have told the OP that the older screw drive lenses would not AF with the adaptor. So B&H was sort of correct-- all Nikon lenses will "work" with the FTZ adaptor, but then the question becomes what is the definition of "work". Sorry that you were misled. But if you want to send me the Z camera, I'll be glad to take it.....

I wanted to get a new Nikon with many Autofocus points. The Z 7 has many, so I chose to buy one. I spoke with my usual salesman at B & H as well as 1800nikonus. Everyone said the Autofocus will work with the new body. I got the camera in Dec. I only tried my 60 mm Macro & the 24-120 lenses. I have many more lenses, but i just never tried them. 70 - 180 Macro zoom , 80 - 200 zoom, 105 DF lens. 20 - 35 zoom . But only 2 Autofocus. B & H told me that I have a 30 day return privelage. No luck there , so they offered me $1200 for the body. When will Nikon introduce an adapter so I can use my other lenses. I refuse to sell the camera for $1200. Nikon , please help me out. Thank you.
I wanted to get a new Nikon with many Autofocus ... (show quote)

"Autofocus will work with the new body" - but did anyone tell you that is true of only certain lenses?? B&H and Nikon do know that - and they should be able to identify the lenses it will work with. I'm not sure whether you did not ask the right questions or did not listen correctly; in any case, it is "water over the bridge" now..

thanks for your help. B & H is essentially closed as far as their retail facilities ..The 70 - 180 macro & 120 DC lens are the two important lenses that I wish would work. They did call me back & offered me a ridiculous amount of money for the Z7 which has less that 100 exposures on the camera. Sorry NO SMILES HERE !

Sorry you made 2 mistakes.
1. You didn't find out for sure before buying that it would AF with all your lenses.
2. You didn't check the camera out with all your lenses before the 30 days return period.

I do think they offer a fair amount of money for a used camera.

With the updated Z7 firmware, the FTZ adapter works well with all my AF, F mount lenses (they all have a focus motor).

Yes probably the over 70 crowd IS better off settling for the old technology, since they will not be living long enough to collect the lenses that really GO with the new Nikon cameras.

What do you mean by the over seventy crowd?. A person can accumulate a lot of lenses
in twenty five or thirty years!
I will give you the last line from the English poet John Donne's poem
No Man is an Island : For whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee.

The point is Nikonians like to talk about how Canon 'abandoned' their FD-mount users thirty-five years ago.
Now that move looks more wise since Canon found it easy to design adapters for all EF and EF-S lenses.

PS - I do not understand relevance of the Donne quote.

I am a Nikonian and yet I believe the abandon of the FD mount was the single best move from Canon to put them in the #1 spot. Before that they were behind Nikon (sure Canon people would not agree).

Since B&H sold you a camera claiming it would meet your needs and then refuse to take it back for the full price;

they are now on my EXCREMENT list !!!!!

I will stick with my 35mm film SLR's and dx dSLRs which use ALL the Nikon Nikkor lenses I own. I may at some point upgrade to a D610 or a D750, though for my purposes what I have is satisfactory. Some people are just more easily satisfied, and for me I only have to satisfy ME.

Mirrorless has no place for me. My Nikon's are more capable than I, at taking photos, besides I can't hear most cameras, and the ones I do hear, I appreciate because when I hear the shutter, I know the camera took the picture. Many give a slight vibration when the shutter trips, so for the ones I can't hear I know the photo was taken.

They would have taken it back for full price. It’s not their fault the OP waited 3 months to decide. I doubt he was intentionally misled. There was probably some miscommunication on both sides, but the OP had a generous 30 days to test the equipment and return it.

The relevance is that we are all going to buy the farm some day. I did not take offense to the truth that
the older we are the likely hood that we will die some day sooner than somebody much younger. Perhaps I
took the statement to literally. I took no offense and I meant no offense. If I offended or annoyed anybody, please accept my apology.

Really, to quote you, "they will not be living long enough ", a new low in compassion and hope here at UHH. I really think you could have worded that post differently, really.

I was not offended and smiled. It’s true in my case. Thinking about trading cars and at 72 I don’t need $30,000 loan or taking it out of my 401-k. Only have about 15 useful years left. But I will buy 3 new Z lenses for my Z6

The truth is unkind? How many 70+ people think they will be out shooting in 20 years, and how many lenses for the new mirrorless will Nikon bring out before they are no longer out shooting? The use of the old lenses with that clunky adapter is a kludge at best, so for the older generation, it makes sense to stick with the DSLRs and leave the MILCs to the younger folks who can wait for the lens selection to catch up with their new format. I switched to Fuji rather than the new Nikon format, because I am an old bag!
